The Native Americans, almost all of them, have some version of the shape-shifter, either as a friend or as a foe. Dusty Barkman, half Blackfoot, half white, comes from a long line of shape-shifters, the ability to become wolf in an instant. A bright, strong young woman, she is determined to help with the repatriation of her friends, the wolves, into upper Montana. She works her way to Resident Sheriff's Deputy for Lincoln County, covering the Federal Parks as well as the unincorporated areas of the high country, where men will be men and women had better be damned tough. Especially a cop. Using her talent to befriend the wolves, her wits and law enforcement to protect them, and her heart to do both well, she is soon helped by, of all things, an FBI loner who has secrets of his own. Soon, the two are into a tremendous battle on both sides of the pale that may spell the end of the domain of the wolf... or the end of her life. Maybe both.
