A Newbery Honor Book

New York Times Best Seller

Wolf Hollow has stayed with me long after I closed the book. It has the feel of an instant classic." (Linda Sue Park, Newbery Medalist and New York Times best-selling author of A Long Walk to Water)

“This book matters.” (Sara Pennypacker, New York Times best-selling author of Pax)

Despite growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and though her bullying seems isolated at first, it quickly escalate. Toby, a reclusive World War I veteran, soon becomes the target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby’s strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. And as tensions mount in their small community, Annabelle must find the courage to stand as a lone voice for justice.

The brilliantly crafted debut of Newbery Honor – and Scott O'Dell Award – winning author Lauren Wolk (Beyond the Bright Sea, Echo Mountain), Wolf Hollow is a haunting tale of America at a crossroads and a time when one girl’s resilience, strength, and compassion help to illuminate the darkest corners of history.

"The narrative is powerful, complex, and lifelike...a truly moving debut." ( School Library Journal)

A Touching Story

I felt as if I were a bystander as I listened to this book. The narration was perfect and the story very well written. A young eleven year old girl,Annabelle, experiences things that will make her who she is as an adult. Don't miss this one.

A friend recommended this book to me and I was not disappointed.

I would recommend it to anyone.
Although it was a middle school level I found the story held my attention and had enough twists in it to make it a little exciting and kept my interest.

Deep listening experience

Our family enjoyed this book immensely. I politely disagree with a previous reviewer who said this isn't appropriate for kids. This book tackles big topics of bullying, the emotional fall-out of war, the importance of kindness and of true morality, but it does so in a way that a 10 and 12 year old can comprehend. It is presented in a way that provides a good starting point for family discussion on these topics. There was a point where I was worried the book would go too far, but it did not. If your children are quite sensitive or easily upset, this may not be appropriate for them yet. But I really believe that most kids will listen without issue, and enjoy this story as much as we did. On another topic, I love that the narrator is an extremely brave girl!

The Truth Doesn't Always Set a Person Free

Young Annabelle, a country girl like many others in the late 1940s, lives a relatively quiet life in a quiet part of rural Pennsylvania. She works on her family's farm, she goes to school in the nearby one-room schoolhouse, she has friends, & she has enemies. But when a town bully stirs up trouble & works to cover her trail & lay blame on the town recluse, Annabelle finds herself right in the middle of events as she tries to reveal the truth to the entire town.

I didn't think I would get so emotionally invested in this story since it's about a 12 year old girl in rural Pennsylvania. But the further I got into it & the relationships between Annabelle & Betty as well as Annabelle & Toby were unfolding piece by piece, I couldn't stop reading. I'll admit --- the events that unfold had me in tears.

Age recommendation: 10 & up

On a scale of 1-10, I give it 10!
