Publisher's Summary

He left KoRn to help himself. He went back to help others. And along the way, he nearly lost everything.

A life-changing spiritual awakening freed Brian "Head" Welch from a stranglehold of drugs and alcohol and prompted him to leave the highly successful nu-metal band KoRn in 2005. What followed was a decade-long trial by fire, from the perils of fathering a teen lost in depression and self-mutilation to the harsh realities of playing solo and surviving the shattering betrayal of a trusted friend. In this intensely inspiring redemption saga, perhaps most inspiring is Brian's radical decision to rejoin KoRn and reconcile with the tribe of people he once considered family in the metal music scene.

Brian returned to his musical roots with a clear head and a devoted heart. Though his story is wild, hilarious, and deeply poignant, the message is simple: God will love you into the freedom of being yourself as long as you keep the relationship going and never, ever quit.

He should read for a living

My wife loved Korn when we were teens, and as devoted followers of Christ, found Heads conversion intriguing. I bought this to listen with her while on prolonged family drives, expecting it to be another example of me forcing her to listen to something edifying, but man was I wrong. The narration alone made this a joy to listen to, with Head doing a downright charming job of impersonating the various persons who color his story and life. In the end, this is a book that will inspire, encourage, entertain, and give hope. As an adult it is easy to feel that the younger people who still listen to "darker" music and the people who play it for them are far from God's love. The story of Brian Head Welch reminds us that there is nowhere God is not actively loving people, and no one he can't redeem and use for His ultimate glory.

A seriously phenomenal book!

What a brave, authentic, honest guy Brian is for writing this. Funny, I was never a big Korn fan back in the day. As a Gen X'er, I loved alternative rock but never had a fondness for the real hard metal stuff, so I never even knew the story of Brian Welch. I am so glad I decided to take a chance on this book. I've only been a Christian for about 7 years now, and my fiancé is about to get out of prison after a 13 year sentence for heroin-addicted crimes. He is clean, sober, and also a devout Christian now. His artistic medium is writing and novels, but he doesn't write conventional feel-good Christian stories. His book are about the Mafia, war, drug dealers, etc. He gave his life to Christ, and his faith is strong and true. Yet as he's getting ready for re-entry and we're working on a plan to publish his books, I've been struggling with whether or not it's "right" for us to be non-traditional and unconventional in our faith through these novels. Brian's story, his love for his daughter, his incredible prayers and most of all, his understanding of who God made him to be really helped me to finally come to terms about my role in our marriage and business endeavors. What a Godsend this book is! I feel so much more confident, joyful (and relieved!) about my hubby-to-be's novels and genres. This has been a real struggle for me. How does someone who doesn't fit the churchy "mold" try to fit into the ideal? Brian's story helped me to see that there IS no ideal. Every believer is ideal. You fight your own demons, you strengthen your own faith, you create your own personal relationship with Christ, and you follow your own path based on your unique gifts, talents and circumstances that the Good Lord gave us. All of it is good! My favorite line of the whole book is, "I was completely floored and humbled, and I sat there in my car in tears at the thought of how good, non-religious and non-traditional God's wild ways are." Love it. Brian's daughter is gorgeous both inside and out, he is an amazing father, and he is going to continue to do unbelievable things for Jesus. I'll be praying for the two of them, and will move forward confident now that I will be an awesome wife to a husband who is also going to do great things and reach out to an audience in a wild, non-traditional and unconventional manner. I can't wait to download Brian's first book and buy his album. His narration was terrific and added authenticity to the writing -- I listened to this audiobook straight through with no stops. Truly recommend!!

RAW, REAL TRUTH

I loved this audio book. It's the second audio of Brian's that I've listened to this year. The passion and love in his voice gives this book even more life.. I love how real and honest he is about his story. His vulnerability is what will set people free.
It also opened my eyes even more to broken people. How God loves and pursues ALL of us. I remember when I was not a Christian, my teen daughter coming home with her first Korn CD. I broke it and threw it in the trash and cursed them. Ha! Look at who just spoke life to me... Brian Welch, of Korn. I am now a Christian and attend Fuse Church in Knoxville, Tn. I've heard amazing things about Brian since I first met Jesus. Evidently, he has visited my church a few times and has friends there. He's the real deal.
Thank you, Brian, for opening my eyes. I love your story. Angee

EPIC !

I am amazed buy Brian's story. mostly because it reflects mine so closely. I thought I was the only Metalhead left in the world who God called back into the scene to be Salt and Light 4 people that Jesus loves so much. I laughed, I cried, I couldn't take the headphones out of my ears. Got through the entire book in one day and one hour. keep walking the walk Brian and keep getting back up when the devil knocks you down. and never forget everyone's watching... No pressure dude!

Touching truth

I read Brian Welch's first book and since have gotten it as a gift for a few friends. His story is amazing and this follow up is even better than the first.
I truly hope he updates us again in a few years.

Another honest memoir by Brian.

Any additional comments?

It's not often I finish a book in one day but I devoured his last book the same way. Brian's simple approach to the throne is one I admire and find familiar. His description and journey of faith reminds me so much of my Ernie. But anyone that believes once you 'meet Jesus' your life is easy won't enjoy this book. Turns out that's just when life started getting interesting for him and his daughter. With a new teenager myself I really loved this, I feel like it could almost have been a parenting book. Seeking counsel through social media addiction, his daughter turning into a cutter and all the angst of these hard years. He is a prayer answering God. In simple, real, honest ways. Highly recommend if you are strong in your faith, struggling, new, or don't know or care about God but like Korn. Because the reconciliation and peace they all experienced is definitely not of this world.

Great story. Should have had someone else read it

This is an excellent and uplifting book. If you have listened to Save Me From Myself, you have to listen to this book.

Welch is not a stellar writer, however. He hits every cliché you can imagine. His voice is also very grating. Stick to singing!

But the story is very encouraging and uplifting, and finally I got some clarity on why the guys who left Korn to follow Jesus went back to Korn

Brilliant

I am 33 and korn have been my favourite band since I was 15. Unfortunately, through trying to emulate them whilst playing in bands in my late teens and early twenties, I failed musically but definitely achieved stardom as a drunk with nasty drink problems. I can see how Brian could get so low in a global metal band, as I did managed it in a small local scene playing with my friends! I never suffered the hardships he did after that time whilst getting life back on track so I think it's amazing that he took the long route back to korn and not the easy one that he could have and still managed to end up so well.
The story is great, always interesting and very honest at the same time. Also being read by a voice I have known so well for 18 years, makes this book even better to listen to. Brian could do with less gravel in his voice, but it's just great to hear him read with the emotion he felt going through it all at the time.
The sceptic in me surfaces towards the end, but people believe in what they believe in, and for Brian to engage the two worlds of religion and metal in the way he does is very brave and shows he means every word.
I would recommend this book all the way.

Excellent, although a bit heavy on the religion

I am not a Korn fan, although I do like metal, and I am by no means at all religious. This book is,however, well worth the credit. Brian is a really interesting guy with experiences well worth hearing. An interesting insight into addiction, the music industry and a single dad trying to do right by his kid.

Really glad I picked it up. What I would say is if you are really offended by the pedalling rhetoric of a born-again this book is not for you. It starts quite light and gets thicker as he gets closer to the present day. Not something I find particularly relatable but I can't begrudge the guy because it's clearly had an amazing impact on his life.

Definitely worth the listen, it's gritty, honest and insightful. You don't need to be a Korn or Jesus fan to take something away from the book or be moved by it.
