Publisher's summary

Star quarterback Marcus Kingston lives and breathes football. He's trusted his abilities and instincts to get him this far, but an injury last season nearly ended his career. When his coaches want him to wear biofeedback technology to analyze his game, Marcus thinks the idea is ridiculous. Plus, the mousy scientist behind the project knows nothing about sports, and she quickly gets under his skin. But with another QB waiting on the sidelines, Marcus can either agree to participate, or be benched - permanently.

Scientist Clare Wynifred values intellect above most things. With her brain constantly working, she has little interest in her appearance and zero interest in sports. She never imagined her wearable tech being used to improve someone's game, but its success with the team could get her a military contract. Clare may be too late to save her brother, but her technology could save the lives of countless soldiers. She just has to make it work with the stubborn quarterback, and she'll be one step closer to her goal. Marcus and Clare butt heads at first, but their mutual attraction quickly grows. And yet, with everything to lose, it's easy to ignore that together they might be able to go the distance.

OMG I'm hooked! I want more!

I love the detail that Leslie put into creating these characters, they have full histories that have a major impact on the direction of the story, but also makes them feel real and that made me connect with them emotionally. In fact during the last hour of the story I laughed out loud and cried.

The story was emotionally complex and very engaging. I could easily see something like this unfolding in real life and that drew me on and kept me riveted until the end.

I can't wait to see where this series will go next, I definitely need book 2.

The narration is nicely aced, the delivery is smooth and the phrasing is very natural. I was impressed with the male character voices, Claire's voice through me at first but it grew on me over time. Overall it was very well done and helped to draw me into the story.

This book was supplied free by the author/narrator/publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Great book

I was given a copy of this audio book for an honest review. I enjoyed listening to this book. The characters were well written & kept me interested throughout the entire story. Both have built walls around their hearts and manage to break them down and fall in love while spending time together on Claire’s project with the team. Looking forward to the other two books in this series.

Great story and narrator to match!

Just over 3.5 hours, I managed to finish this book in a few listens, over the course of a couple weeks. Leslie North's writing is unique. It wasn't difficult to follow the characters. No overload of details that weren't necessary and overall a great story. I was so touched by the fact that Marcus is color-blind. He only sees things in black, white, and various shades of gray (no pun intended). I do not wish to offer spoilers, but I was moved to tears when he tries on the glasses. The chemistry between Claire and Marcus grows intensely throughout the story. I love that.

You can tell Rebecca Roberts has experience in narration. I have no complaints whatsoever. She read the story with clarity. I once listened to an audiobook where the narrator stumbled a little over the words. Not frequently, but a few times. You never want that. In my limited experience as an audiobook listener, I know we don't want a poor representation of a book's story and characters. This said, I feel Roberts brings a lot to what is already great read.

4.5★s

Great storyline! I hope the tech is being employed on our high risk missions!! :-D Lol, I thought it was amusing putting a nerdy girl into the path of football. :-P She came in like a cowering mouse and left leading the lion by its paw. :-)

I fell in love with her when she brought some amazing devices (no spoilers) that I've recently been hearing more and more about. He was a broken boy in a grown man's body. My only issues were that it was like he as her lover was taking the place of his brother. Kind of a big stretch to me… because I kept thinking it was meant that it was her lover/husband. Now, he did for certain leave a huge hole in our heart and was great motivation for her to help others with her strengths! I don't know how she helped him to heal from his past. Maybe as if he was stuck in it? They are a nice couple together.

The use of world building was a bit hit and miss for me. At times it seemed overly done in technology and then too in the rules & slang of the sport. I grew up with a brother football player and then up through college with a marching band daughter. I don't know if others would understand the jargon without such a closeness to the sport. But good on those who do! :-D

There were 2 scenes were I totally appreciated her attention to detail and 1 I could have lived with out. I suppose she had to throw in some shock value words to describe the sex scene. Personally, I think a more classy handling of it would have fit the character's personalities. Be that as it may, the ending was quite satisfying and had a happy ending.

The narrator was perfect. :-)

My star ratings include these 5 elements:
1★ story line
.75★ engaging characters
.75★ use of world building/descriptions
1★ the ending
1★ narration or editing

Enjoyable novella

Audible. Also available via KU.

This is my first book by Leslie North and my first experience listening to Rebecca Roberts. It won't be my last for either one. North does an amazing job of crafting an engaging story into this novella. There's always something fun about the stoic athlete with a heart of gold and the nerdy girl who isn't as reserved as everyone thinks. There were enough steamy scenes to satisfy those who are looking for it without overtaking the plot. I was also incredibly intrigued by the tech aspect and appreciated the care North took in explaining to the reader/listener. Despite being only 3.5 hours, I felt a connection to Marcus and Clare as individuals, enjoyed their blossoming relationship, and was invested in their HEA.

Rebecca Roberts did an excellent job narrating this book. Roberts gives Clare her sweet and stern moments the perfect inflection and also has enough inherent "gravel" in her voice so that Marcus sounds naturally masculine.

Go for the goal

Wired is the story of a pro football player who when faced with the decision to comply with management or risk losing his position on the field must bite his tongue and move on. What he wasn’t expecting is for Claire, the girl whose technology is making his life on the field more difficult to help him see who he truly wants to be when he’s off the field.

Claire has one goal in mind. Get the job done so she can fulfill her dream...since losing her brother Clay she’s had one mission, but will her brothers sports idol be willing to risk his own game so she can score when she has the opening?

Overall this was a good story and the narrators did nice job of demonstrating the emotions of each. This was my first L. North read and I’m sure there will be more.

Excellent

A thought provoking romance with a lot of heart. This can be read as a stand alone if you choose, but I highly recommend reading the other two books as well. This is an excellent series. There is a community spirit in this series that leaves you feeling very positive after you've read the books. I received a free review copy of the audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.
