Publisher's summary

The Monster of Karth has risen once more. Quin Tern of Azbar has met his fate, and his council has borne the price of crossing Raz i'Syul Arro. Now, as the cruel walls of the city fade into the winter storms at his back, Raz rides north, seeking to take the High Priest Talo Brahnt up on an offer he never should have refused. The path Raz has chosen, though, is a bloody one, and before long he and his new companions find themselves pitted against hardships they can neither anticipate nor ignore. As man and snow and beast alike rise up to block their path, it seems almost as though the North itself has woken to wage war against the Monster.

And yet, Raz's greatest challenge still looms ahead. Far to the north, like a plague beneath the trees, Gûlraht Baoill, Kayle of the savage mountain tribes, leads his armies further east with each passing day. He has set his hungry gaze upon the reaches of Cyurgi' Di, the High Citadel, and desires nothing more than to see it razed from the face of the world, offering it and its blasphemous "false-prophets" up as sacrifice to his Stone Gods. Syrah Brahnt, the High Priest's adopted daughter and protégé, has found him out, discovering his plan to lay siege to her home, cutting her and the rest of the Laorin off from the world. As it is, though, there is little and less that she can do, and when the first of the Kayle's generals reaches the base of the mountain pass, Syrah is left with only one option. In the end, she will have to face the wrath of the tribes herself....

Little does she know that the Monster is coming, riding hard to lend her his blades.

Gritty, violent

I waited until I finished the series before writing a review. This was a difficult series for me though Bryce is an accomplished author and Mikael Naramore is an outstanding narrator. The story is extremely violent, certainly not for the squeamish. Definitely not for everyone. The climax is very powerful and well crafted, which frankly made the story. Sub plots dealing with cruelty and prejudice including sexual assault were at times over the top. Not a light hearted fantasy read, to be sure.

THE DRAGON OF THE NORTH IS BORN!!!

Winters king was another great installment in the series. As always I wish there were fewer F-bombs, but the way O'Connor is still wonderful. The more emotional parts of the this book were well written and handled with grace. As always at the end of one of these books, I want more! can't wait to start the next book in the series!

Good but dark

Struggle to finish with the fact that everything goes wrong and its super dark. Other than that, good fights, plot, and world.

two ships passing in the night trope taken too far.

I love the characters and the world... but I found myself telling the author to eff off every time he contrived a confrontation where one didn't need to happen and avoided a confrontation you as a reader would have very much liked.
something happens to a character in this book and it doesn't get resolved till the last 4 hours of the story.

the author goes to extreme lengths to prevent people from rescuing said character and it gets to be a bit much.

I suspect the author has a sadism fetish.

the contrivance and the stupidity of the priests makes this a hard read...

A necessary evil

Again BOC doesn't pull his punches, and does a great job of taking typical heroic moments and twisting them dark. Raz, the Monster of Carth and the Layoren act as great foils to one another. The story and setting are vivid and the characters act in believe able ways.

My only criticism is in the Citadel itself, or how the Layoren act within.

The author establishes the rules well, but the sense of them, for the amount of time spent on them, is still very vague.

other than that. Great book!

Raz continues his carnage...and growth.

Book 3 in this saga continues strong.
Mountain men, priests, battles. If you read books 1+2... don't even question #3...grab it now. I really enjoyed the priest caste...so different then usual fantasy visages of these important characters. Also...another fantastic narration.

Great fantasy and action ride!

Winter's King

Series: The Wings of War, Book 3
It had been awhile since I had read the first two books and I was wondering if I would need to read them again to get back into the story but I didn't. Once I started it, everything came flooding back! The characters are so memorable! There is nothing out there like these books! Do start with book one so you know Raz from the beginning. All the things he has been through, achieved, lost, and he continues on. This ends so great! One of the main female characters is sexual assaulted but it doesn't go into it, you know it happens but it doesn't talk about it...just a FYI. This is a very action packed war book so there is lots of violence and the fight scenes are excellent! Yes, I am an old woman but I enjoy exciting adventure and action too!
There is a touch of romance in here also! Our Raz is growing up! Lol!
I love the narration! Perfect for this book! I felt like I was there helping kicking some goatmen butt!
Love the plot, creativity, characters, and emotions it made me go through. This book was a clever, witty, sad, happy, and suspense-filled ride. Love this series!
