Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Publisher's summary
Author of the best seller Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers, Dr. Karyl McBride draws on her expertise in treating children and partners damaged by narcissists in this practical new guide to divorce and its aftermath.
With more than three decades of experience as a licensed marriage and family therapist, Dr. McBride guides you through the emotional fallout and challenges of being married to and divorcing a narcissist. The court system assumes that both parties in most high-conflict divorces are at fault, but a narcissist can wreak havoc in the divorce process. Dr. McBride shows how to navigate this kind of divorce and how you and your children can heal afterward.
Written for those considering or already going through divorce as well as the professionals working with them, Will I Ever Be Free of You? has three parts: "Recognizing the Problem", "Breaking Free", and "Healing from the Debilitating Impact of Narcissistic Relationships". You begin by learning exactly what narcissism is, how to identify it, and how it affects relationships, then how to begin and carry on through a divorce and make the best decisions for you and your children. Dr. McBride lays out a road map of trauma recovery for the whole family, offering a step-by-step program for recognizing and healing from the particular emotional damage that narcissism causes.
This guide offers new therapeutic strategies and practical guidance for protecting yourself and your children through this difficult time.

This book will illumine common patterns, unpack some of the worst of what divorcing people experience, and explain solid ways to defuse aggressive contentiousness or manage the damage a hostile ex-partner can do. The author is a highly experienced and insightful clinical psychologist, focused especially on the suffering of children in a hostile divorce. Not for me
It was educational and gave me insight as to if I am ever a parent and dealing with a narc father of the child but I have no children so I learned alot about how to protect a child in that situation but wasn't something I'm dealing with and the purpose to listen, for me, was for person help. Still educational, just more for people with children who have to deal with a narc.

Highly recommend!
I’ve heard over 100hrs of audiobooks, videos and podcasts about this topic and still found this book extremely helpful. She covers the themes in such a way, that even when you are familiar with the topic, you get a lot out of it. She also provides an adequate amount and range of examples. I found myself pausing it to take notes, so if you have the opportunity to buy the physical book as well I’d recommend it. Moreover, her voice and ways of saying things are so soothing and kind that I felt calm and hopeful, not like some books that overwhelm you or make you anxious. I think she also does a great job at being gender-neutral and anyone could relate. I deeply thank you Ms. McBride for taking the time to write this book!

Good Information
Wish it had more examples of how to deal with difficult exes. Still, good as a spring board.
