Publisher's summary

The forest behind Renna’s home is dark and dense. It holds more secrets than she knows. Having grown up in the half-pocalypse, a world balancing against the tide of a blood-borne virus, Renna knows the rules by heart:

  1. Stay inside between dusk and dawn.
  2. Close and lock the copper and silver screens.
  3. Report anyone suspected of infection immediately.

Now, at 17, Renna will have to survive against the rules.

  • An unprecedented attack.
  • A strange boy with copper eyes.

Can Renna survive the darkness to save the people she loves?

Unique Story

I enjoyed this book! I really love the idea of a half apocalypse. Life hasn’t collapsed but adapted, and I haven’t seen this that often. I thought this book was well written and interesting and would definitely buy anything else by this author. I highly recommend.

I would also like to note that the narrator did a fantastic job. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and am thrilled when a narrator is good. 5 stars all around for Wilders.

Great read

I loved this story. I was hooked from the beginning. I was on the edge of my seat, unable to put this story down. The characters are believable and likeable. I even liked the cat. This is not your typical zombie apocalypse. I like the term half-pocalypse. Your safe during the day and stay in at night. Until these wilders change their habits. Great read, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to reading more by this author, Cass Kim.

Fast paced entertaining, the time just flew by...

I enjoyed this book,it was an interesting concept. The story moved fast yet the characters became real to me as they are so well written.
Liz Brand gave a wonderful performance. I will be watching for everything new by Cass Kim and watching for books narrated by Liz Brand in the future.

Surviving in the Half-pocalypse

With the flood of “zombie apocalypse” style novels saturating the market these days, it is refreshing to find a new take on the old theme. Cass Kim’s book stands out from the pack for two main reasons. First, her equivalent of the zombies (and for the record, her story does not have zombies but the far more creative “wilders”) have not yet completely destroyed civilization. Humanity (at least in the United States) has adapted to what keeps getting referred to as the “half-pocalypse”. Life is not easy in the new normal, but it is livable. This provides a quite different story environment than the typical tale and that was very refreshing.

The second reason Kim’s book leads the pack of this subgenre is that it is not about simple survival but something much more important in the grand scheme of things. (It’s difficult to write about this without giving away an important plot twist.) There is plenty of action in the book, but larger issues than personal survival are dealt with on a very intimate level that really struck home with me.

So those are the big issues that can be summed up as Wilders has a unique flavor for this subgenre, but by themselves they would only have made this an interesting book—not a great one. Fortunately, Kim populates her world with a believable cast of teenagers who are trying to thrive in the half-pocalypse. It’s a difficult balance which Kim handles with a master touch dealing with the basic immaturity of young people when the consequences of teenaged rebellion can include being eaten alive by wilders. Add to that parents who are emotionally damaged by the civilization-threatening events and Kim has created a social environment that quickly builds sympathy for her cast and adds quite a bit of tension to the story.

Finally, every novel can benefit from superb narration and Liz Brand certainly does her part to bring this book to life—especially excelling at young, easily differentiated, voices.

This was a very interestiing listen.

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

The narrator producer :

The narrator was exceptional. She has great cadence interpretation and command of the story.

The author and story:

This is a long novella - 41k words maybe. It was very well done. I am not a Zombie fan. This was very much in that vein. I will not provide any spoilers. But Ms Kim had a VERY interesting twist and take on the this genre and the central elements that drive the plot as to the zombie Sci-Fi elements. It had a strong "I am Legend" tone to it. And a little "Twilight Sage" appeal as well it seemed to me. That's all the spoilers I will give. It did leave room at the end for a possible sequel. But all stories seem to end that way.

Well done and those that like the zombie apocalypse (near apocalypse here) genre will LOVE what Cass Kim has done. She has great command of her style and story development I can see as I've looked at the excerpts of her other works before this. So she is getting keener on developing her craft.

Thank you Cass Kim for an interesting audiobook. I do recommend it.

Very unique world

I loved this book. I don’t know why I’ve never heard about the series until now. It’s so unique. I can’t wait to see what the future holds and if they are onto a cure or if it mutates more than they are ready for. The characters are so wonderful. And this is the best world building.

The narrator really brought it alive even more. I loved listening to her.

A hole new kind of zombie drama

This story is incredible!
We all know the usual zombie take of the post apocalyptic future of a virus release.
This could be just one more, but in here the author chooses to speculate what the world could be if the zombie virus was not the end of the world as we know it but just a new normal.
Of course even in here there are those that don't agree with the status quo and try to find a cure (or some of the sorts). Our heroine gets mixed up with this group of outsider scientists and is asked to help.
This story takes a lot of themes just like I love and mixe them in a perfect bled creating a rich story with many layers. I think you will left just wanting more like me.

I'm listen to the audio version and I fully recommend the Liz Brand as the narrator. Her work really helps bring the story to life.

Was much better than expected

After listening to quite a few outbreak stories, they can be a 50/50 hit or miss. They are either ultra gory or turn into lovey dovey twilight wannabe. This one was neither it was just happy middle ground. Tells the story of just your average teenage girl trying to survive in new world of normal. Also would recommend for young teens as it didn’t have the overkill of vulgarity and bad language as adult novels tend to do. Narrator did great job and was easy to listen to. I was given this title in exchange for honest review and I honestly would recommend as It was something I could see myself using a credit for easily without regret.

Entertaining

Well at least it’s not a full apocalypse. People adjust when there is no other choice. Entertaining story and characters, made even more enjoyable by the narrator. It took a creative turn I would not have predicted. I wish it was a little longer. Ending is a cliffhanger.
