Publisher's summary

Back in print after a decade is Wild Cards III: Jokers Wild, featuring fiction by George R. R. Martin, Roger Zelazny, Walter Jon Williams, and others.

On September 15, 1946, the Wild Card virus was released, spreading a wave of mutations around the globe. "Aces" were endowed with extraordinary powers while "Jokers" were cursed with bizarre mental or physical disabilities. September 15th is now Wild Card Day. With each passing year, the festivities become larger and more fevered. And 1986 - the 40th anniversary - promises to be the biggest Wild Card Day ever.

But in New York City, not everyone is celebrating: The Astronomer, a twisted, powerful genius, has been planning his own special festivities for Wild Card Day...a day of revenge against those who have opposed him....

Luke Daniels is king

This story wasn't quite as good as the previous books. also, Luke Daniels reading in the previous ones is so good.

Would have been better with Luke Daniels

I was a huge fan of Luke Daniels' narration in the first two books. His characterization was fantastic and I still heard Doctor Tachyon with his voice. He was just great and because of that I can't rate the performance higher than 2 stars.

While I normally hate audio books that have multiple readers I do have to say this was not the worst. Each character's perspective is read by a different narrator. Most of the time this works out until scenes overlap and you have Pam Greer's interpretation of Tachyon and Fortunato directly followed by Prince Onayemi's interpretation of those two characters, and even a third narrator near the end. I thought I was going to hate it but in the end it was okay. Prince Oanyemi and Felicia Day shine.

As for the story I really enjoyed it. It was interesting to have a number of overlapping plots across one day told from different perspectives. I can't imagine how GRRM kept everyone straight. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Though I'm debating if I'll just buy the next volumes just to read myself rather deal with another cast's version of the characters' voices.

worst narration. horrible attempts at accents.

super disappointing narration compared to the last two books Hiram's voice actor was okay and fortunato's was okay and I really like the guy that read specters all the female parts are pretty disappointing.it was pretty hard to tell who was speaking at any given time and their accents were not terrible. probably would have been better off with one actor doing the whole book

A REAL STRUGGLE

I really liked the first four of them and was excited to hear this one but it was a real effort to slosh through this. I felt this book's narrators did not flow as well as previous books causing the flow of the book to choppy at best.

Problematic

The narrators on their own were fine together though it made the story jumbled with characters having different voices constantly. also too much Fortunato please for the love of Jetboy let this be it for him for a while. hes creepy and off putting.

Luke Daniels made the characters come to life

The “performance” (if you can call it that) by these narrators is stunningly terrible. Hard to follow the action, can’t tell the difference between which character is speaking what line.
I am 6 characters in and I honestly don’t think I can finish this audio book with these awful narrators. They have ruined these characters and honestly they have ruined this book. I am just going to read this one instead.
If they had narrated the first book I wouldn’t have finished the first book.
I can not stress enough how awful they are.
Save your money and just get the print version.
I hope “they” ask Luke Daniels to come back for books in the future.

Not a superhero book

I think the author actually hates the hero genre. This book is nothing but an orgy of death with absolutely no point. It's as if it was written by a spoiled brat who just wants to ruin the suoperhero genre. If you love the idea of the Superhero, stay away from this series.

Weakest yet

Day and Grier are really bad actors, voice or otherwise.
Martin needs to calm down with his weird sex focus.

Less is more

Third in the series and definitely the weakest so far. I like most of the performers normally, but the lack of cohesive dialogue control with voices for characters changing so drastically and so often took me out of the book too often. When I was immersed it was enjoyable. The writing improved over the last one with Fortunado being much more true to his core than the last outing. Exploration of previously ancillary characters was nice, but this volume lacked any real sense of fun found in the previous installments. Was better with original single narrator and the sense of adventure. This may be my last entry for this series.

SKIP IT! 😱

Five stars is excellent.
Four stars is good.
Three stars is OK.
Two stars is poor.
One star is unreadable/unlistenable.
-------------------------------------------------
I couldn't and wouldn't finish this book.
That is rare for me and I dislike doing so.
However I also hate to waste my time and my opinion is that this is s waste of time.
------------------------------------------------
Very seldom do multiple authors cohesively write a book (when they write in sections) that does not have jarring transitions in style, syntax, verbiage, etc. that results in the reader/listener mentally "stepping back" to try to comprehend the meaning of the "jolt" just experienced. When the meaning is not a plot function it is disconcerting and takes one out of the story flow.
