Publisher's Summary

Desire tempted them. Honor forbade them. Love ensnared them.

Legendary warrior Lachlan MacLeod has never encountered anything or anyone he could not conquer. But when his younger brother confesses his love for Bridgette MacLean - the only woman Lachlan has ever wanted - Lachlan turns away from the beautiful Scottish lass, vowing to be no more than her friend. Yet his need for Bridgette enslaves him and may well prove to be the one thing he cannot defeat.

Fiercely independent Bridgette longs to be treated as an equal to the men. She always imagined great battles in her future, not great love. Then Lachlan saw her as no one ever had and captured her heart, awakening new cravings inside her without realizing it. But when Lachlan's younger brother suffers a grave injury while saving her life, she feels unable to deny his plea for her heart. However, it is impossible to give what belongs to another.

Torn between their own desire and their loyalties, Bridgette and Lachlan must find the courage to grasp the passion awaiting them and face the pain their choice will cause. Yet even as they confront their future and love finally seems within their grasp, a fight for the Scottish throne divides the Highland clans and Bridgette becomes a pawn in a political game that threatens to tear her and Lachlan apart forever.

Warning

It was a brilliant book until the lead woman is raped. I wished there was a warning on this book.

Rape

If you don't mind a woman being raped and the emotional stress caused by the rape, then this is the book for you. I, personally, don't purchase a book to have to experience that through the heroine in the book. I like to be entertained and THIS was not entertaining.

Wonderfully written

It's always a tough read when a story addresses brutal acts against women and children. This story is no different. I felt raw emotion as I listened and at times had to stop to collect myself. But it was worth it in the end. It speaks well of the writer when you can feel that much emotion.

Wonderful and emotional

I enjoyed book two of this series. I’ve read some of the other reviews and I think they are a bit harsh. I appreciate that the author was able to capture the very realistic situations that women of that time was faced with. I very much liked the story, characters and the refreshing real life struggles that truly can be overcome with love.

Emotional...

I have to say that the rape part that other reviews have had issue with, is disturbing.. However, I think it was realistic..In the 1300’s rape was common and even though we all like a HEA, sometimes it takes struggles to get to that HEA.. This book made me angry, sad, happy, exited... I felt every emotion that only a great writer can provide.. I loved the book & series!

It needs a trigger warning!!

Lovely book and great plot, but there is a rape. I wasn't expecting it and really struggled with the rest of the story. In all of my time reading historical romances, the threat of rape is real but never before was the act carried out. Be aware if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

I also personally dislike male narrators for romance novels. I skipped over the explicit material in this book and its predecessor. It makes me uncomfortable, simply not my thing.

Bonny book

Have loved this series by Julie & Tim’s narration fantastic as always. It brings together strong men & women who battle to find their HEA through the beautiful sometimes harsh wilds of a long ago age in Scotland.

Made me shudder

Whereas I sometimes roll my eyes when the heroine is always rescued at the last possible moment, I found it disturbing when she was not. The rape in this book was very difficult to listen to, and made me wish I hadn’t bought this book. Although I do think it is an important topic, it made me shudder. Good narration.
