Publisher's summary

In the Garden of Eden, there was only one "No". Everything else was "Yes".

In this short audiobook on childrearing, Douglas Wilson points out that we have a Father who delights in us and makes it easy for us to love and obey him. If that is the kind of Father we have, shouldn't we earthly parents do the same? Wilson explains how parents should not just try to get their kids to obey a set of rules or to make their house so fun that following the rules is always easy. Instead, he calls for parents to instill in their kids a love for God and His standards that will serve them well all their days.

This audiobook also features an appendix in which Doug and his wife Nancy answer various parents' questions about various applications of the principles discussed in this audiobook.

I wish I knew this sooner

I read a few books and listened to a lot of commentary about raising children as well as listening to many sermons in church. I feel like I missed out on a lot of good instruction and this book is now going to be a requirement for my children to read when they are going to have children.

This is a great book that doesn't get into a lot of psychology or deep theology. It's very practical and makes a lot of sense. I think it's easy to read and very applicable which is most important.

Very condensed parenting book

I've read a lot of parenting books and this book felt, to me, like a summarized version of a lot of them in one small book. Where this book has one paragraph other books would use a whole chapter.

There were lots of good points about gospel-centered parenting, instruction & discipline, and being kingdom focused in our daily lives. However, the narrator was pretty dry and not great to listen to - luckily its a short book.

Convicting and encouraging

This was a great little listen. I will be changing some aspects of discipline in our home due to listening to the content of this book.

Household Wisdom

Wisdom on household leadership that is thoroughly rooted in Scripture and raw experience. Read it. Then read other things Douglas Wilson has written. Also read C. R. Wiley. This is the way.

Listened three times

Such a great, short read that really gave my husband and I a new perspective on parenting. We especially appreciated the Q and A at the end, and found ourselves listening to it repeatedly, easy to do with such short chapters. I’ve recommended it to handfuls of people so far.

Loving your children as the Lord's Inheritance

My wife and I were raised in a form of Christianity one could call "individualistic." Repenting of this, we together saw that the Scriptural promise was to us AND OUR CHILDREN. We had not previously thought through the implications this would have (practically as well as theologically) in raising children. This book is gold, but far too short. Couple this work with, "The Federal Husband", "Future Men", "Reforming Marriage"... really anything Pastor Wilson writes on the Family, along with Joel Beeke's work on worship and raising children with the gospel, and enjoy a full, robust understanding of the covenantal family. If reforming the church is going to be anything more than a flash in the pan, we need to reform the way we raise our children.
