Ava thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers' retreat in coastal Italy. At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria", meets "Dutch", a man who seems too good to be true.

Can you fall in love like they do in the movies? It's Evie Summers' job to find out. Because if she can't convince her film agency's biggest client, Ezra Chester, to write the romantic-comedy screenplay he owes producers, her career will be over. The catch? He thinks rom-coms are unrealistic - and he'll only put pen to paper if Evie shows him that it's possible to meet a man in real life the way it happens on the big screen. Cynical Evie might not believe in happily ever after, but she'll do what it takes to save the job that's been her lifeline.

Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990 - and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

Excruciating. Save yourself.
- By Kristyn Rose on 05-11-19
Publisher's Summary
An achingly funny story from the author of the best-selling You Had Me at Hello.
When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues' wedding, all the blame falls on her - turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your school days. Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie's forced to take an extended sabbatical - ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right?
Wrong. Banished back to her hometown of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a man who probably hasn't heard the word no in a decade but also suffering an excruciating regression to her teenage years as she moves back in with her widowed father and judgy, layabout sister.
When the world is asking who you are, it's hard not to question yourself. Who's that girl? Edie is ready to find out.

Stellar!
Cute, well-written, uplifting, and well-grounded rom-com! The storyline flowed and the characters were well thought out. I love seeing the character progression. it is so refreshing to enjoy books written from the perspective of someone who is well-versed in what healthy relationships and good boundaries look like!!!!! The narration was good as well.

Completely disappointing
Let me say up front that if bullying is a trigger for you, avoid this story and many of this authors other books.
The narrator did a fair job. I can say that. Sometimes her pronunciations were odd, but over all decent.
But the positives end there. The entire story is a slow-motion crashing of people never saying what they mean to say. The rare moments of honesty are lost among angst and supposition, hurt and anger. I found myself skipping ahead near the end, because the emotional scene that was meant to be climactic became so drawn out and wrung out and needlessly angsty that going through every word was too hard to stomach.
I won’t spoil the end but if you’re looking for something that seems well thought-out and satisfying, don’t even start this book.

Dragged and rubbish ending
This had loads of potential but her previous relationship drama and choices were grating, and the ending was rubbish. It was a bit stretched out and dragged too. Shame because there’s a lot that could have been done with this story. The narrator has been great with other books, and although she was mostly good, it was really stilted and unnatural for a lot of the dialogue.

Enjoyable but ends flat
I enjoyed listening to this book, the background with the family was told well and I could relate. Quite a few ha ha moments. While I was hoping the two main characters would get together there was something lacking, not many lead up moments that had you gripped. The ending was also a let down. Some people like open endings but I feel so incomplete especially after committing so many hours to the story... The narration was mostly good except that there was no voice difference between the two main characters so couldn’t tell who was who in some parts.

I have become a fast fan of Mhairi McFarlane, she has a beautiful way of explaining a feeling. I personally think the term ‘input overload’ will stick with me every time I look at my phone.

Nice little book
Highly predictable, cliché modern day fairy tale. From the very first paragraph when He is mentioned, you can tell the way it will end. There is no change in voice what so ever, so it's very hard to differentiate who's saying what particularly in conversations between two main characters. It'll keep you entertained on your commute to work but not a memorable type of book I'd like to read again.

Witty and entertaining
Good narration, story line, and the twist at the end. Overall another solid book by Mhairi McFarlane. I could envision a sequel to this!
