Who is Spencer Haywood

Spencer Haywood is a former NBA player, Olympic gold medalist, and a member Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. But most importantly, he's the man being "the Spencer Haywood Rule" allowing high school and college basketball players to enter the NBA. This is his story, and how it affecting the sport of basketball as we know it today. 

My Childhood Sports Hero

As a kid in the Seattle area, I was captivated and inspired by the great Spencer Haywood. I inhaled his stats and sports page coverage, and read his biography at the time called, Stand Up For Something. I was personally slow of foot, gangly and uncoordinated, but I had a soft jump shot and a nice shooting touch that I developed by watching and mimicking Haywood for hours on end. I can still easily conjure the mental image of his beautiful spin jumpers in my minds eye. He was such a huge hero for so many Seattle kids, and I felt wounded and confused when he was eventually traded. It’s great to hear his voice and see the new book, The Spencer Haywood Rule, telling a more complete version of his story. Dear Spencer, may you remain satisfied, successful and happy in a manner matches the enormous pleasure that you brought to all of us Seattle SuperSonics fans in those days. Thank you!
