Publisher's Summary
Celebrated, best-selling, elusive...who is Maud Dixon?
Florence Darrow wants to be a writer. Correction: Florence Darrow IS going to be a writer. Fired from her first job in publishing, she jumps at the chance to be assistant to the celebrated Maud Dixon, the anonymous best-selling novelist.
The arrangement comes with conditions - high secrecy, living in an isolated house in the countryside. Before long, the two of them are on a research trip to Morocco, to inspire the much-promised second novel. Beach walks, red sunsets and long, whisky-filled evening discussions...win-win, surely? Until Florence wakes up in a hospital, having narrowly survived a car crash.
How did it happen - and where is Maud Dixon, who was in the car with her? Florence feels she may have been played, but wait, if Maud is no longer around, maybe Florence can make her mark as a writer after all.
Critic Reviews
"Clever, cunning, and diabolical in the best possible way. Anyone longing for a good old-fashioned thrill need look no further." (Ann Patchett)

Wanted to give up after the first few chapters but stuck with the story and ended up enjoying it in spite of my scepticism
The narrator is overly dramatic and it grates on you initially but I learnt to live with her performance once the story took hold. Good plot and characters but in my opinion, no more than an airport read - or now that we’re not travelling as much as we would like , a beach or a couch read.

This surprised me
To be honest, this bored me for the majority and I hated Florence. That ending though. Wow. It definitely saved it from being a 2* read.

Twisty, gripping thriller
I am conflicted about this book. It was well written and extremely well read by a great narrator.
However, I was repelled by the two protagonists, who were unlikeable and ruthlessly self-centred & ambitious.
Somehow, the story grabbed me in spite of this & kept me listening - although there were times when I had to take a break from the bleakness of the characters. I wanted to know how it would resolve. The story ended well - but left me with an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
