Publisher's summary

In this second audiobook of the Shetland Quartet to feature Inspector Jimmy Perez, the launch of an exhibition at The Herring House art gallery is disturbed by a stranger who bursts into tears, then claims not to remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day he's found dead, wearing a clown's mask. Set in mid-summer, the audiobook captures the unsettling nature of a landscape where the sun never quite sets and where people are not as they first seem.

Second time around

I’m rereading White Nights over as I’d mixed up the order. Makes more sense now. Love the character development. Great series!

Great book

Thought I wouldn’t like this book because I watched the movie series but it was different enough to make it really special

Picked up where last one left off...

This beautifully strange world of characters just this side of cliche, but far enough to this side to be believable and interesting and unpredictable. Could be any place really...once you open the doors and look inside the secret lives of the inhabitants.

Highly Recommend

I enjoy Cleeves' Shetland novels as much for the rich picture of the islands' people, geography, and culture as for the mysteries.

Not as good as the first book but good

Not as good as the first book in the series, but good. It’s set on a northern Shetland Island at a time when it doesn’t get fully dark at night and involves an elegant but hippie-ish artist whose art show is disrupted by a stranger who freaks out over amnesia and then turns up dead. Lots of possible suspects, and the deepening backgrounds of the recurring characters are fun to follow. Bechdel test: Pass. Grade: B+

The narration was, again, seamless.

Well-written procedural w no gore.

The narrator is alright. The voices are more dramatic than I prefer, the by the denouement, he was practically hysterical. Unfortunately, the same narrator reads all the Shetland series, but the stories are good. You may like his style.

Best yet

I've read five Shetland novels and this was the best. I read them out of order but felt this was the most satisfying. The close atmosphere between jimmy and the islanders pervaded the story. The mystery is a bit unfair as facts unknown to the reader emerge at the end of the narrative to solve the "crimes". But it is enjoyable never-the-less. Mike
