An inspirational classic for more than 30 years, Where Is God When It Hurts? honestly explores pain - whether physical, emotional, or spiritual - and sheds new light on God's presence in our suffering. Includes a discussion guide.

"How can a loving God allow this to happen? Either God is all-loving or all-powerful, but he can't be both."

You've heard that question, and perhaps even asked it yourself. No matter how you complete it, at its root lies the issue of pain. When a loved one dies, we receive a terminal diagnosis, or natural disasters strike, people often wonder whether God is the cause of suffering and why he doesn't immediately take away the pain or fix the situation. As a result, we become angry at the once-beloved God who betrayed us.

In this Gold Medallion Award-winning book, Philip Yancey uses examples from the Bible and from his own experiences to show us how we can learn to accept - without blame, anger, or fear - that which we don't understand. He answers questions such as:

  • Why is there such a thing as pain?
  • Is pain a message from God?
  • How should we respond to suffering?
  • How can we cope with pain?
  • Does faith help?

Yancey speaks to everyone for whom life sometimes doesn't make sense. With compassion and clarity, Yancey brings us one step closer to finding an answer when our pain, or the pain of those we love, is real and we are left wondering, where is God when it hurts?

Not what I expected

Yancy is a gifted wtiter, but the theme of this book isn't what I expected it to be. I hoped it would provide a bit of solice for women who had lost their children to death, but it is more for people who have physical pains and challenges.

Why Pain and Suffering are Necessary

Where does Where Is God When It Hurts? rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a very thorough book on the theology of pain. Godly people have reasons why a good person is suffering, but are not accurate in their views of God.

Perspective is everything

What did you like best about Where Is God When It Hurts?? What did you like least?

The in depth study of those is pain seemed to drag on and on... this was both the best and worst part of this book. The necessity to understand the pain demands spending time with the characters in pain. At times it was challenging to focus.

Was Where Is God When It Hurts? worth the listening time?

Absolutely

One of my all time favs, updated

Fabulously deep book on pain - so caring and insightful. Judith West, there is still need for editing of the audible version - mistakes of the readings in several chapters (ie ch 12).

A Must Read

As a True Life Christian whose gone through his share of suffering (the greatest of which I was just a couple of weeks past my 18th birthday when I suffered a traumatic brain injury & 1 month coma), this book comes highly recommended by me! It is not that we go looking for the path that we think could bring us the most pain, but gives you the hope to deal with it with Jesus at the center of your life.

Inspirational encouragement

This book is a wonderful encouragement to Christians who are in the midst of painful circumstances, wondering where God is and whether He has abandoned them. Phillip Yancey gives a number of perspectives on pain and suffering which cast a helpful light on how suffering can be purposeful and have eternal meaning. He resists trite explanations which end up adding salt to the wound and trivialising or invalidating the pain, but caringly and sensitively draws our attention to God's faithful and sovereign involvement in the midst of their pain. To be thoroughly recommended whether or not you are in pain.
