Publisher's summary

One moment everything is perfectly normal, and in the next the power grid across the entire United States goes down and sends the country back to the Stone Age. The lights flicker out. Cars crash. Phones and laptops quit working. Planes fall from the sky. Fires rage. Hoards of angry mobs take to the street looting and pillaging. Millions perish in the horrific aftermath.

With the cities completely overwhelmed with death and destruction, the forests of the Pacific Northwest seem to be the only place of possible safety or refuge. That's what brothers Randall and Thomas think as they fight their way to their family's secluded cabin to locate their grandparents, parents, and cousins, only to instead find themselves proven completely wrong as a new deadly threat from the woods emerges.

Trapped in an unforgiving world without help, Randall, Thomas, and the rest of their family must trust in one another and put their skills to the ultimate test to fight back against the overwhelmingly dark forces that now directly threaten their very existence.

The awful narrator…

I got as far as chapter 5, I just couldn’t go on. When Butler and his group entered the story I was hoping they were just characters passing through, I could possibly make it to the end. Unfortunately it became clear that it wouldn’t get better. Still at that point, I really didn’t think it could get worse, I was wrong!!

Good start that fizzles due to the read.

Character voices were too hard to listen to. Couldn't finish it. Probably would have enjoyed it otherwise.

I had to stop

Short and sweet. The book was intriguing but I couldn’t make it past chapter eight. The narrator was terrible in my opinion. I tried but just couldn’t listen anymore. His (the narrator) different voice variation go from bad to worse. With every additional character introduced I wanted to gauge my eardrums out more and more.

Not good

Not sure if it’s the narrator making the book bad or the book is just bad. Starts off in the common part of an apocalyptic theme “good guys killed someone’s brother/uncle/father/son in self defense and now that someone’s “leader of the compound” wants payback.” Doesn’t spend much time on anything other than being hunted, shot at, shooting, running, planning rescues. Don’t mind that sort of theme if it isn’t the whole subject of the book. Couldn’t finish especially with the narrator’s voices and too off tempo.

No. Just don’t

I listen to a lot of books. Many post apocalyptic stories. The story is ok. Not great but OK the narrator is atrocious, absolutely atrocious. It makes it so much worse than it actually is.
