Not Terribly Practical

Though I'm pretty much always disappointed, I keep checking out cookbooks as audiobooks when offered at one of my favorite book sites. I don't think cookbooks work well in audiobook format; they aren't just something to be read like fiction or a regular nonfiction book but are actually meant to be used. Not only is it hard to find individual recipes in a cookbook audiobook, but if you find one you want to try, it takes a bit of effort to write down all the ingredients and directions—stopping, pausing, rewinding. Audible offers publishers the fantastic ability to provide a PDF along with their audiobooks, and I think every cookbook audiobook publisher should take advantage of it, either offering all the recipes in written form—audiobooks are far more expensive than eBooks, after all—or at least proving a list of recipe titles with their timestamps in the audiobook so that listeners could go right to a recipe that interests them. This publisher did not choose to do that, unfortunately. As to the book itself, after a brief introduction to Dutch oven cooking, the publisher gets straight to the recipes. Throughout the introduction, the publisher tries to make a point of stating how useful Dutch ovens are for cooking while camping, yet many ingredients would be bulky or difficult to take along on a camping trip (like ones requiring refrigeration). All in all, I wasn't impressed with this audio cookbook.
