Publisher's Summary

Robbie Cordwood went to jail for killing the three men who raped his wife. He expected to stay there and not get out. That was fine by him. Justice served. But one day the world changed, and THEY came from the stars. Then THEY started taking over peoples bodies, crawling in through the mouth. The prison doors were open, and no one knew what to do next....

Hooyah!

A thirteen-year account of a man and his wife who never gave up resisting after an alien invasion. This short piece from Derwin Lester is not as poignant as some of his other works but it still left me ruminating on what I would do in Robbie’s position. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Reminds me of some old 80’s movies

Reminds me of some old 80’s movies like they (or they live?) with the wrestler roddy piper as well as slither. Good short listen will keep you entertained.

Good story

There is solid ground here for the Author to build on. I feel as though he missed some major opportunities making the book this short. I would also like to know how or if it is connected to his other books.

An Engrossing and Wild Ride for Everybody

Another great entry in this author's catalogue, and an all-around engaging and thrill-packed ride. The story is delightful and well-delivered, both in terms of writing and the excellent narration, and all the detailed worldbuilding is tied up with a riveting plot that all comes together in the gut-punch of a climax...I really highly recommend this book!

Shut those traps!!!

A bug flying into your mouth will definitely take on new meaning after listening to this. lol. Kind of like Body Snatchers vs War of the Worlds. It also reminded me of the star trek episode where those slugs were being put in their ears and they were being controlled. I really enjoyed it. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll just say it was well written and I love how it incorporated past events as well. I'm totally taken aback by the ending....but it's definitely reminiscent of syfy stories/movies so I wasn't surprised. It's a definite must listen for all you syfy lovers out there. Theo Holland just does an amazing job with the narration and character voices. I thoroughly enjoy listening to him and he just brings the story to life for you. I really loved the main characters. I mean how can you not love a man who does anything to protect his wife, and a wife who.....well I can't spoil it so you will just have to listen to find out. The first time he meets the preacher man is pretty cool too!!! It's not a long story....but it's a great story that will leave you with something to remember for sure.

Death to Squids!

Would you consider the audio edition of When They Come for You to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print version, but I very much enjoyed how Theo Holland brought the various characters to life.

What other book might you compare When They Come for You to and why?

No book comes to mind, but it reminds me of the series "Falling Skies", only darker.

Have you listened to any of Theo Holland’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Theo Holland is one of my favorite narrators--- he never disappoints.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was rocked by the ending.

You never need luck when you've already cheated.

This is a short series of vignettes following Robbie and his ex wife in the twelve years after an alien invasion. Each fragment, as well as furthering character development, also leaves much to the reader's immagination: a clever use of abbreviated writing.

The narration is good, steady, capturing the essence of Robbie's personality as he relates his story in the first person. Heavy use of conversation makes Theo Holland's use of differentiated voices crital. A nice , fitting to the text performance.

I was fortunate to be freely gifted a complimentary copy of When They Come for You, at my request, from the rights holder via Audiobook Unlimited. Thank you. I have read and very much enjoyed several other short pieces by the author, Darwin Lester Ii, and am fast becoming a fan. Quirky, perhaps not for everyone but very visual and different from most post apocalyptic scenarios whether, as here, aliens or zombies. Every time I have been left wanting more. Give it a try. Highly recommended.
