Publisher's Summary

I was never afraid of monsters - at least, not until they came: the visitors from outer space.

Now, they’re in our skies, on our streets, always watching, forever waiting.

At 17, I’m just about to graduate from the Juvenile Education System and declare my career of choice. The Midnight Guard - who protect our community from the vicious things that lie outside our walls - calls to me.

It’s hard, dangerous work, with grueling hours that offer little sleep, but it’s the one thing I know will help make a difference in our ever-changing world.

When They Came!

Reviewer: Teresa Fallen Angel Summary: This is one possibility of what could happen in an alien invasion. The horror that Anna Mia and all of the survivors lived through was evident in their struggle to survive. From living through her father being harvested on the first day of the invasion, Anna Mia never gave up her drive to live and protect everyone around her. On the last day of her education Anna Mia chose the most difficult work, to become a member of the Midnight Guard to protect her community. This choice, not good or bad, sets off a chain of events that could change everything for humanity. What the aliens wanted and why they harvested humans are questions that are left unresolved. This was a fast paced and riveting audiobook and I for one can’t wait to find out what happens next.

What a surprise!!

I received a free audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not know what to expect (I tend to feel this way when they are free-a bias I apparently have) but it was good. There were a few irritating parts with the narration but I am over that now-just a few words were pronounced weird but honestly I cannot even recall the words now. I continued with the series so that says something for my interest level!

Exciting Tale

This is an interesting alien invasion story. Kody Boye put his own spin on the story focusing more on the characters than the aliens. In this way, the first book in the series is about humanity and how we adapt. The narrator did a good job telling the story. She was animated as needed as needed and somber when it was required. Krys Janae truly brought Ana Mia to life. I enjoyed the story created. Boye wrestles with the ideas of what we do as a family and what we do as a county, a world, Ana Mia is split between them both when she joins the Midnight Guard. Her life becomes even more complicated when she is attacked by one of the coyotes, one of the extraterrestrials that have overrun the world. The end sets up for an exciting second book that expands on the aliens and I can’t wait to listen to it. I received a free audio copy for review; all opinions are my own.

I'm somewhat confused

I'm not even really sure what was going on in this book. It couldn't keep my interest, unfortunately. I'm sure it would be a great book, I just couldn't concentrate on it.

Great first book in the series!

I really enjoyed this first book even though there was a lot of character and world building. At least, now that this is out of the way, we can get to the action ;-) This book does have plenty of action in it, though. So if that is what you are looking for, read this book. I will definitely check out the next book in the series.

Dystopian Alien Invasion!!

When They Came by Kody Boye is the 1st in the When They Came series! This was a great Sci-fi, post apocalyptic dystopian YA adventure!! Alien invaders and a struggle for survival, I was really caught up in the story. Looking forward to more from Ana Mia's story!

3.75 slightly scared STARS ★★★✬✩

This book might be for you… Do you ache to dive into a light dystopia that features more than your average apocalyptic scenario? Search no longer and be ready to freak out at the thought of eerily smiling human-like coyotes hunting your dreams. ⤐ Overall. The audiobook of When They Came drew me in from the minute it started. I really enjoyed this dystopian universe. It was creative and a bit creepier than your average end of the world scenario. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the alien narrative per see, but if you're not even remotely attracted to the idea of extraterrestrial life, then I don't know what to tell you. I mean, it's creepy, smiling coyotes that are apparently walking upright. What the heck do you want? I'm also enamoured with the potential romance I’ve sniffed out during the last half of this book, even though I’m not sure whether that’s just wishful thinking. I like that it's apparently hinted at, but not too central to the development. Instead, time is used to paint the picture of what this world looks like after the invasion, how humans devolved (is that even a word?) and what survival means now that the night is owned by the monsters. One thing that really turned me off, so to speak, was the fact that people left and righT seemed very eager to sacrifice themselves for our heroine, even though it's not even apparent whether she's worth it. In turn, all Ana Mia appears to do is flee from danger while people die in her stead. Which again questions ... you know, whether she's worth it. I'm also a bit unsatisfied with the way her trauma it depicted. It's pretty decent in some aspects, in others, however -(view spoiler) - not so much. ⤐ What’s happening. What would you do if the world as you knew it had ended 6 years ago, invaded by a superior alien species with the appearance of giant coyotes? Humanity is now constantly on the lookout for itself, locked away in insular forts that need protection from the beasts that come at night. Ana Mia, determined to join the midnight guard - the soldiers who, come nightfall, watch into nothingness, waiting for the devious siles of the coyotes to appear against the black of night -, aches to do her part in the survival of the human species. On her first big scouting trip outside the walls of her fort she gets bitten by one of the beasts, though, and everything changes. _____________________ writing quality + easy of reading = 3* pace = 4* plot/story in general = 5* plot development = 4* characters = 3* enjoyability = 4* insightfulness = 4*

When they came

I loved the consept of the book and there were parts I loved but it dragged at times and this made me lose interest. It's not a bad read but I have read better. would I read other works by this author? Yes I would. I loved how she wrote about the aliens, it sent chills up my spine. It had a little of a horror feel to it which I really liked. The books is violent in some places but that is to be expected and it did not put me off the book.

Dystopian meets sci fi

This story has a bit of Sci-Fi with a lot of Dystopian feel to it. It leaves you with so many questions! Now I want to know what happens in book 2! The narrator does a good job as well getting emotion across!
