Publisher's Summary

Two of paranormal romance's best-selling authors combine their extraordinary talents and set your headphones on fire with an after-dark anthology featuring Alpha males so hot, so wild, and so bad, they may just be the best you've ever had....

Shelly Laurenston,"Miss Congeniality"

It's those damn stockings that get me every time. They have this sexy little line down the back and I can't help but stare at her legs. . .constantly. And you'd think she'd be all over me like every other female in the Seattle area. I'm young, good looking, and one day I'll be Alpha Male of my family's Pack. But Professor Irene Conridge acts like I don't even exist. How is that possible? Now she's got enemies coming out of the woodwork and I have to protect her. Why? Because that's the kind of man I am. Yes, I am that amazing. Of course, it doesn't hurt that while I work to secure her safety, she'll be hanging out at my house. That's hours. . .days even that I've got Irene Conridge right where I want her.

Cynthia Eden, "Wicked Ways"

I'm too dangerous for her. I know it, but I can't get my sexy new neighbor out of my head. When I hear her scream one night, the absolute last thing I expect to see is Miranda Shaw - star of my hottest fantasies - being attacked by a vampire. Now the undead jerk is after her, and I'm the only thing standing between the beautiful lady and a killer who just won't stop. Well, too bad for him, because that vamp has just made the worst mistake of his afterlife - he's tangled with a shifter. And Miranda, well, she's so busy watching out for him that she won't see me closing in on her - not until it's too late - and I'm about to show her just how wild I can get....

Two shifter stories.

5 stars. Miss Congeniality by Shelly Laurenston. This is a novella that can be read at any time in the series but I recommend reading it after Wolf with Benefits. Gotta love the bluntness of honesty in this book, it makes for some awkward situations. Irene was funny in her Bitchy "with a capital B" way. This is a case were vinegar and water do mix and makes a HOT combination. This is defiantly a great addition to the Pride series. I missed Charlotte Kane voice from the other book, she adds humor to the series. 4 hours 37 mins.

3 stars. Wicked Ways by Cynthia Eden. It was an okay story, but nothing that makes me want to read more by this author. It drives me nuts when a women who has no experience thinks she can defeat the bad guys if she puts herself in the way. I don't get it when authors try to make women smart by giving the characters big degrees but have them do some of the stupidest things. 3 hours 52 mins.

Nick Toren was passable, his voice was deep and sexy, it just didn't have much inflection in it

Great stories from proven authors/bad narration

Enough said- my headline says it all. I LOVE the books on the Smith and Van Holtz packs and when read by Ms Kane, they are even better than reading them. But this is read by someone that is very one-dimensional in his narration with abysmal accents. He is obviously not an actor as he doesn't emote very well- he is just 'reading' it. I wish I had read it and not wasted a credit.

Love the stories, Horrible Narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I will grab a Shelly Laurensten book every time! This story is fun and gives some back story on characters in her other books of this series. BUT...The narrator is awful. If a narrator can "make it or break it" for you, don't waste your credit on this audible version; read it instead.

What didn’t you like about Nick Toren’s performance?

One dimensional, boring, passionless. He could have been reading the NY Times Stock Report for all the enthusiasm he put into reading this. Basically, all he is doing is reading, not performing the story. It's hard to tell the difference when he switches between character dialogue and story narrative. He makes no effort to differentiate between character voices. Enough said, very poor narrator.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Sure!

Great story, BAD, BAD narrator

What would have made When He Was Bad better?

Charlotte Kane narrating.

What did you like best about this story?

I have everything written by Shelly Laureston. First in book format and now in audio. Her characters are funny and believable. Cynthia Eden is a good author also.

How could the performance have been better?

Get a different narrator.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The authors.

Any additional comments?

The narrator read this book as if he were reading a shopping list. He kept a steady boring monotone throughout the book. Had it not been for the fact that the Laurenston story was part of a series I would never have continued with the painful narration.

4.25* Miss Congeniality, 2* Cynthia Eden

4.25 Stars for the Shelly Laurenston story. I’m glad I found this in the audible escapes package. Can’t believe I missed it before now. The narration was meh but the story was great!

I’ve read and listened to pretty much Shelly Laurenston’s entire catalog at least once and loved all of it!!! I missed Charlotte Kane on this one. She should have narrated every book in this world, going all the way back to the Magnus Pack through the Honey Badger series.

She has become my favorite female narrator for one of my very favorite authors, and she kills it on these diverse characters!! 🥰 ESPECIALLY DeeAnn, Sissy May, Blayne, Dez, and Gwen. And even Lock, Cella, Bo and Ronnie Lee sooo just about every single character. These audiobooks NEED her. Her comedic timing and dramatizations are outstanding and Nick Toren was lacking in both.

As for Wicked Ways... 2 stars since I finished it, but I forgot the name of it by the time I started writing this and had to go back and find it. That’s what it was for me, a very forgettable tale. Not enough pull to make me want to check out the series if this is a part of one.

Final thoughts: if you’re thinking of giving it a try, don’t buy the audiobook. The narrator isn’t really good. Only listen if you have the romance/audible escapes package and can listen for free. If not, buy the kindle edition of Miss Congeniality. Try the book by CE if you’re a fan. Maybe you’ll get something from it that I didn’t get.

I HIGHLY recommend ANY of Shelly Laurenston’s (aka GA Aiken) series. If you’re a person of color or someone who loves reading stories that reflect characters representing the world at large (SUPER DIVERSE CAST-not at all cookie cutter), then I absolutely, 100%, recommend Shelly Laurenston. ALL of her series feature women of all types so give them a try!

Follow on book

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Can't say

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Nick Toren?

I would have preferred the narrator who was used in the original series.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No - too short

Any additional comments?

I listened to the series first. The narrator was much better in the series. This book was really short and felt like an after thought. It wasn't detailed well.

Van's story,

I've read this one I don't know how many times, and I still love it, thought I like Cynthia Eden, the draw for me is always the pack series, and Shelly Laurenston. Her humor is addictive. I was a bit surprised by the male narrator, but he did put an interesting twist to a favorite story. More please, books 4 to 8 are hilarious, and the novellas here and there a often more than interesting, filing in some details of this weird but wonderfull world.

Enjoyed these stories

I love, love, love Shelly Laurenston but was not familiar with Cynthia Eden. I really enjoyed all the pack cross over in Shelly's book. I enjoyed Cynthia's story even though I haven't experienced any other stories.
I did not think the Narration was nearly as bad as others complained. It was not great but am thankful he didn't use a retched falceto for the female voices. I have heard more unfavorable narration/voice/ speech patterns than Nick Toren but then I really liked his voice so other complaints were more forgivable.

It was better when I read it

Aaaahhhg. The narrator was so emotionless and monotone. I often couldn't tell when he was switching from reading narration to reading dialog so that made things confusing, especially since, except for a couple exceptions in both stories, ALL the characters had the same voice. And I could not stand the way he said BABY 🤢 GAG. Like Fat Bastard saying "get in my belly" eeeeeuuuhh. I'd read it before, and like Shelly Laurenston so that's why I listened all the way through that one. Not sure if Cynthia's novella would be more entertaining without the bad narration though...maybe?
