Publisher's summary

Is it possible to hold on to faith in an age of unbelief?

Intellectual certainty has long been a cornerstone of the Christian faith. But in an age of secularism, skepticism, and cynicism, our worldviews have been shaken. Various solutions exist - some double down on certainty, while others deconstruct their faith until there is nothing left at all. But Brian Zahnd offers a third way: What is needed is not a demolition, but instead a renovation of faith.

Written with personal and pastoral experience, Zahnd extends an invitation to move beyond the crisis of faith toward the journey of reconstruction. As the world rapidly changes in ways that feel incompatible with Christianity, When Everything's on Fire provides much-needed hope. A stronger, more confident faith is possible when it is grounded in the beauty and truth of Christ. Zahnd permits us to risk the journey of deconstruction so that God can forge something more beautiful in its place.

Best book on faith and “deconstruction”

As a pastor, teacher, and friend, I've known many people who feel that their faith—and therefore their life—is on fire. This isn't in the 'on-fire-for-the-Lord' sense, but flames that threaten to bring to ash their once passionate trust in Jesus. More and more people in the West are walking away from their faith, but it doesn't have to be this way! There is no better guide than Brian Zahnd for someone who is in a season of life when everything's on fire.

Brian's ability to speak as both prophet and pastor illuminates a path forward for those who face a dark night of unknowing. Rather than offering pseudocertainty and pithy apologetical arguments—rooted as they often are in modernity's gods—Brian invites readers to embrace the greatest mystery of all: a God who actually looks like Jesus!

From now on, when I have a friend and/or member of my congregation who is going through a faith crisis, When Everything's on Fire will be the first book I hand them. I can't recommend this book enough—it's deeply moving no matter where you are in your journey with Jesus!

Great book and excellent narration

This was very inspiring. I find Zahnd’s theology so Christ-centered and beautiful. If you liked Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, you will like this one. Very well narrated too. Well worth checking out!

Brian Zahnd is a gifted man. This this book is “Gold”.

I found BZ a few months back. I had heard of him. Started listening to his sermons on line. He is humble. He knows what he believes and why.
I like audible book listening and this one had me from the first page. I should say that his sermon “when everything’s on fire” had me curious about this book. Then a person I admire mentioned he had read this book and told me to not miss it.

Huge gift of truth

Perhaps a bit technical at times but such glorious truths for those of us in the church struggling with questions that feel unwelcome.

Wonderful guidance

Brian has done a great service for Christians that struggle with fundamental upbringing and still believe in the resurrected Jesus Christ-he very inspiringly gives guidance in how to be grounded and established in a personal revelation of Jesus Christ that will navigate us through “this present darkness “ until we are are dwelling in the “Father’s House of Love”-thank you Brian for this wonderful gift. Very insightful history both secular and religious-especially regarding the enlightenment, modernity and post modernity. Coverage of kierkegaard and Nietzsche very helpful in understanding the challenges that caused the “battle for the Bible” issues that then helped develop “fundamentalism”.

Must read for everyone seriously pursuing faith

Prophetic, hopeful, I must read in our day and age. I want to be a part of the church he describes and to have a fate that resembles what he seems to have.

A Vital View of 21st Century Christianity

Zahnd handles the challenges for the Christian faith of the 21st Century with masterful elegance. He names the ways we have weakened the faith by our misguided attempts at defending it; yet, he claims a bold, new vision that can call the church into a future that more fully resembles the Kingdom of God.
