Kevin thoughtfully explores some of the most important questions we can ask in this life. What is God? Is there an afterlife? Why are we here? Does God conditionally or unconditionally love you? What did Jesus really teach? Is everything in the Bible true?
What I appreciated most is that he doesn’t ask you to simply accept what he’s saying. He invites you into the process. To ask your own questions. To seek. To wonder. To actually engage with the material and everything you’ve been taught, rather than passively agreeing with it.
At the same time, he lays out strong core ideas early on, then walks through scripture in a way that feels thoughtful, grounded, and honest. I wasn’t deeply versed in the Bible, so I found this especially insightful. He helped me begin to see the difference between what feels like truth and what may be human distortions of that truth. You can feel the years of work, reflection, and courage behind it.
My biggest takeaways are these. That your relationship with God is personal. It doesn’t have to be filtered through a preacher, an institution, or anyone else. That God is pure, unconditional love, where fear, judgment, and condemnation do not exist. And that Jesus was right: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
I highly recommend this book. But don’t take my word for it. Go experience it for yourself.
Oh, and how interesting, I’m writing this the day after Good Friday.
