Good Book, in a Great Series. Perfect Performance.

The "What You Need to Know About:" Series is what "For Dummies" "Idiot's Guide" books should have been. All the introductory guidance to get you started, but none of the embarrassment, or insult.

This one on Project Management is a near perfect primer on the otherwise terribly complicated world of Project Management (try Googling it, you'll never know where to start). It is also a well rounded introduction to best practices. The references to additional resources are excellent, and are mentioned throughout where applicable.

Anyone who wants to become a project manager professionally, should start here, even if only to get cleared up on the jargon, and vernacular first. Anyone looking to actually get things done more effectively, by managing their own projects with less confusion in their lives, may need go no further than this book.

Colin Mace's delivery is superb. I could listen to his reading all day.

Needs pdf for all external content - PLEASE

Would you consider the audio edition of What You Need to Know About: Project Management to be better than the print version?

No but it is easy to listen to except for references to external content.

What did you like best about this story?

Does a good job of covering the material without any real examples :)

What does Colin Mace bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It has some personality

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Validation that people at my work know nothing about project management.

Any additional comments?

Overall good

Good overall review and beginner view of project management. Not a good book to read for prep for the PMP exam. Uses real world examples to show how project management is done. Worth a read but not for study prep.

Useful by sticking to the reality of the situation

Out of all the books I've read about Project Management this one seemed to stick to what has proven to work in the world without getting tied up in the symantics of process and compliance. Keep it simple s... that's what I was looking for.

better and hard copy

overall I think the book is good. However my biggest issue is I think this would be much better in a hard copy. constantly references links and tables .

simplistic, not the least bit informative

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The author is way too simplistic in his explanations. He offers little if any examples. In my opinion, a terrible book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Nothing from this author.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Colin Mace?

Not a viable question.

What character would you cut from What You Need to Know About: Project Management?

The entire premise of their assumptions.

Systematic and organised

Very useful tool.
This is the first book I've bought on Project Management, and it is in my opinion that it should be everyones.
It lays the foundations for you to arrange any other more 'industry specific' project management books atop. Its not claiming to give the ins and outs of all industries, but it does give you a more than 'common sense' approach which is transferrable.
Without the structure and directions in this book you may well end up chasing your tail as a project manager!
I am busy drumming this into myself at present, as I want it to be the basis of how I orgsanise my thinking prior to undertaking any major tasks.
Hats off to Fergus O'Connell

Informative and interesting

This book is an absolute godsend if, like me, you've found yourself landed with a project management role and nobody can tell you what exactly that entails.

From start to finish, this book details the precise steps to take to ensure your project success. Using simple examples of successes and failures and the many things that can go wrong, as well as providing plenty of recommended reading and useful websites for anyone looking to do further research, the author provides the skills and processes which help keep projects on track - and keep the project-manager from having a breakdown.

The narrative is clear and concise and the audio-narrator is articulate and clearly comfortable with the subject matter.

This is a book I would recommend to friends and colleagues without hesitation and I will revisit it on many occasions.

A must buy!

It is what you need to know

I am not a project manager but have managed many projects and have scars and trophies to show. I have read several project management books and attended one day training courses. This book is thoughtfully and clearly presented and I would have thought a must for all but experienced project managers.

Excellent book

I purchased this audio book on the recommendation of the one review. I am glad I did. I have found it really helpful. The ideas, good practice and anectdotes make this an easy book to listen to - and I'm so impressed, I'm about to buy the printed version too!

superb overview of hard core and effective project management that's system agnostic. I've found it extremely helpful when moving into a pm role. totally invaluable in fact. I've been through it three times and already looking forward to another run through. lots of recommended further reading too. a great start if you're looking for a first pm book.

No nonsense writing that's well structured and very engaging. I'm about to start reading it all over again.

Great reminder and some refreshing honesty

Highly recommended as a text for project managers who want to remind themselves of the essentials. Particularly enjoyed the reference to magicians and the power of saying no.

Humorous delivery of a serious topic

Working in project management for many years now, I didn't really learn anything new from this book but it is very good, gets to the point of the subject without wasting any time. I loved the narrators delivery, gave me quite a few laughs. I'd recommend to anyone starting out in project management or those struggling to manage their projects.

Pretty Good Read, Experienced or Not

This is a pretty good book for project management, regardless of your experience. Even if you have spent years on projects, I think you’ll still find a thing or two that will make you think and say “hmmm”. If you are a beginner, I would say definitely read it as a complement to your training or certification. Happy with the purchase.
