Publisher's summary

In a collection of original essays, the venerated television journalist, Dan Rather, celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the United States great, Rather brings to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offers listeners a way forward.

After a career spent as reporter and anchor for CBS News, where he interviewed every living president since Eisenhower and was on the ground for every major event, from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to Watergate to 9/11, Rather has also become a hugely popular voice of reason on social media, with nearly two million Facebook followers and an engaged new audience who help to make many of his posts go viral. With his famously plainspoken voice and a fundamental sense of hope, Rather has written the book to inspire conversation and listening, and to remind us all how we are ultimately united.

Editing is bad

The editor/producer should have corrected the constant clicking sound and Rather’s voice escalations.
But still a great narrative.

Very uplifting book.

A great book for these complicated times. Reminded me that this country has dealt with tough times in its history and we used to respond. Will we respond and unite this time. I say yes

A must read

This was a pleasant but earnest reverie and exhortation. The reading by Rather himself, lends this audiobook the perfect inflection of poignancy and sincerity.

Reinstalling hope and patriotism.

love the story! Mr. Rather is a bit of a dry reader, but what would you expect with his years of journalism. The story is wonderful and gives me a positive feeling for America. Let's unite and "keep steady".

Just Thank You

Mr. Rather what I would not do to be able to sit and talk to you. I taught American History for Thirty years. What Unites Us should be mandatory reading for all Americans. Thank you for reading your own book. Your message was enhanced and richer hearing it in your iconic voice. I cried several times with relief of your message against the stark reality of the last four years. I felt a feeling of pride to be an American again that I have struggled to feel for a very long time. The lessons and reflections in your book are pure Americans. I have listened to this book twice. I will listen to it more. I also feel that I need a hard copy of this great book. So that I can stop and reflect on portions of the book that need more time to let them sink in. I never wanted to leave my car where I listen to books. It was such a great read/listen. Many more years of health. Write more!!!!! Thank you for the optimism and hope.

Truth

An amazing book. If you don’t know the truth the words inside will inspire you to find the truth in our country.

A message of principles from a forgotten lexicon.

Humble, polite, and reverent reflections of the currently discarded American values that shaped our nation.
