A stunning, tragic memoir about John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and his cousin Anthony Radziwill, by Radziwill’s widow.

What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a prince, Anthony Radziwill. Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. At nineteen, she struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, and to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy.

What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean carrying John F. Kennedy Jr., Anthony’s cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole’s closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. With unflinching honesty and a journalist’s keen eye, Carole Radziwill explores the enduring ties of family, the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention. Beautifully written, What Remains “gets at the essence of what matters,” wrote Oprah Winfrey. “Friendship, compassion, destiny.”

This book is beautifully written and read, it is an incredible tale of love for more than one person. Carole Radziwell is such an incredible woman and she is way more than what you see on The Real Housewives of NY. She is a real person, who I admire and respect far more for her life than a Realty TV show. This book is wonderful !!

Way more than a Real Housewive

Loved it. So honest. Not at all revealing other people’s truths. So sad. Too sad. I loved each person as if it were a great novel. Carolyn B Kennedy seems like she was a very loving woman and good friend. I was inspired to be kinder, and to enjoy each moment of this life. I’m sad to think that the 3 people the author loved most have all passed on. Her strength to go on is amazing. Just a note- when CBK is quoted as using the “R” word, I think that should be removed. She seemed like a great person and that doesn’t serve her. That word is not used and not ok.
Other than that, so sweet and true. I would love to hear more stories. Her husband and John jr.- their friendship seemed so untouchable and so rare. The weight of being JFK’s son… ugh. Lovely book. I’m sad.

Lovely, heart breaking, honest

I enjoy listening to this memoir, I enjoyed the very descriptive way the author wrote. I felt that I was there with a bird's-eye view witnessing everything described. such a brave strong woman to endure all of this. I remember watching her on Oprah when I was in college and 18 years later her story has the same impact. really makes you think of life and place it in a better prospective. We really don't know how blessed we are to be surrounded by our loved one's Blood Related or Chosen. I look forward to listening to more of her work.

Pensive, Heartbreaking, glad I listened.
