Publisher's Summary

"I just wanted to be normal, but the day college started a supernatural world opened up. Now I don't know who to trust...or even if I'll survive the night."

A new urban fantasy series from the award-winning screenwriter of ground-breaking BBC TV series Spirit Warriors

When Marley moves into her dorm at Blackville University, she has classes to sign up for, parties to attend, and an over-protective father to avoid, who, as luck would have it, has just been hired at BU as its newest history professor.

While trying to befriend her roommate, Marley discovers that Cassie might just be the oddest - if richest - girl she's ever known. Then there's Eve, the older girl with a mysterious past who hides her true face under layers of makeup and a bitchy attitude. Thank God for Tyler, who seems nice and has the kind of hair Marley would kill for, or she would think college life was a bust already.

After a disastrous night out ends with them all thrown together for the first time, something happens that no one expected. Something magical. And suddenly they discover they each have been gifted with strange new powers - but why? And who is the mysterious good-looking stranger who seems to know far more than he is willing to tell them?

One thing's for sure: Saving the world has never been this twisted!

Fans of The Mortal Instruments, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Pretty Little Liars will love this thrilling new series!

Written like your favorite CW or Netflix show, expect thrills and heart-thumping romance as well as epic twists and turns that will keep you guessing!

Great first book to a promising series

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is a story of 4 girls meeting at college. Each girl has her demons, some suffer from perceived mental illness, some from bullying, the loss of their parents.... As they all meet at college, a very strange thing happens to all 4 at the same time.. Their lives will never be the same again.

There is some supernatural involved, but this makes it more interesting.

This was a great introduction to a series that I'm looking forward to listening to.. The narration was great and the book kept you on your toes.

I can't wait for book two.

Wow!

I was given this book for free by my request but the opinion is of my own. This book literally grabs you literally from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Marley is trying to start anew in college after dealing with bullying because of her seeing things no one else could. Suddenly she is pushed to see that just perhaps what was considered a mental illness is more real than given. Does end in a cliffhanger and I’m definitely wanting to read the rest.

Entertaining & enjoyable read!

My fourth read from author Jo Ho & the first book in a new series was well-written & enjoyable, a tale well-woven over the entire length of the short book, the suspense building throughout. Since I own both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Allyson Voller. It looks to be the beginning of an enjoyable series that I look forward to reading and have to go out & get the next book in the series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

the story of 4 girls discovering their true power

This book leaves me wanting to hear the next. It is a story of 4 girls starting college meeting, and discovering their hidden talents. You fall in love with the characters and all their flaws. The story also keeps you guessing until the very end! A good book that will make you want to hear the rest of the story! The writting is very well done. It makes it easy to envision everything. The narration was very well done as well bringing life and emotion to the characters that were so well written.

Great start to a promising new series!

What Doesn't Kill You is Book 1 of the Twisted series by Jo Ho. First off, it was a lot of fun and I can definitely tell that Jo Ho has written for the screen before. I can totally see this as a show on the CW or Freeform. This is the story of Marley, a girl who is starting college at Blackville U, which also happens to be the same school where her father is teaching. Anyways, she meets her roommate and a few other people and during one crazy night, she discovers that there's more to the group than they had ever expected! This book was written well and does a good job of introducing the main characters to the listener and really sets things up for the next book in the series. I didn't want it to end!! So just to note, this isn't a book with a cliffhanger, per se, but know that everything won't be all tied up with a shiny bow at the end of this book. It's meant to make you want to listen or read the next book in the series.

Allyson Voller did a good job narrating this first installment of the Twisted series and I think she would be a wise choice for the others to come as well. She does a great job of giving each character a unique voice and adds the perfect amount of emotion while narrating when it's called for. I'm looking forward to listening to her narrate the next books in the series! I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Promising start to a new series.

Word of warning: this book is going to leave you wanting to know what happens next. What Doesn't Kill You is the first 'episode' of Jo Ho's urban fantasy Twisted series. In this episode we are introduced to a diverse group of young women all with their own unique quirks and issues, with the book culminating in a rather dramatic scene...which then leaves us with a ton of questions. This isn't a bad thing (other than the other books aren't yet available in audio format yet, lol) The Twisted books are written in episodic fashion intentionally, as the author envisioned it as (and hopes to one day have it become) a TV series. It has sort of a "Charmed" vibe to it (and I mean that as a compliment). Filled with complex characters and an interesting plot, I'm definitely interested in seeing where the story goes from here.

This was my first time hearing any of Allyson Voller's work and I have to say I enjoyed her narration quite a bit. I'll definitely listen to more of her work in the future.

A Hint of Paranormal

Loved that the characters were very relatable. A quick short listen with just barely a hint of paranormal.

There are more volumes in the series and this one makes you want to keep listening to see where the author takes it. The author wants to eventually see this series make it to a tv series, and I can see why; it has a lot of potential!

The narrator did a great job staying consistent as she changed voices between characters. A great performance.

Excited to hear more from this narrator and writing by this author.

Captivating and has you at the edge of your seat!

Jo Ho has hit a gold mine with this series in my opinion! This book is exciting yet suspenseful. The narrator definitely does an amazing job and vividly painting a picture of the scenery and actions throughout this book!

It's gripping, intense, and TWISTED! I cannot wait to continue this series and with this duo of an author and narrator, I know it's gonna be one hell of a ride!!

Interesting concept

This book was like reading a pilot episode for a tv show. Which I think the author was going for. It isn’t a completed story with a beginning, middle, and end, but it isn’t bad either. It sort of leaves you hanging at the end but not in a horrible cliffhanger way. I think this story would work better on screen as I had a little trouble telling them apart (other than Eve).

Great short listen

I read the first instalment of this book series and thought this is going to be great and when I got the chance to listen to the audio version I was pretty excited. I love the style of writing that comes from Jo, she makes it suspenseful and exciting.
The narrator Allyson Voller was a great choice and I enjoyed listening to her voice. I don’t like giving too much away in a review except to say Spooky things happen at college that bring these girls together. There are 9 books so far in the series.
The only thing I will say is so you don’t go WHAT at the end is you will want MORE. And hopefully the rest of these books will come out in audio .

Great fun, action-packed series

I am a great fan of this author and series. The audiobook is a great listen, although a shorter book it is packed full of action and mystery centring around four intriguing but troubled college students, listening to it is like watching the pilot episode of a great new supernatural fantasy show. The story is suspenseful, twisting and suspenseful with lighter moments and leaves you on a nail-biting cliff-hanger just waiting for the next instalment. The narration has been done really well, setting the tone bringing the characters to life brilliantly.

Fans of shows like Vampire Diaries, Buffy and Charmed will love these books.
