Poor narration

Unfortunately, the narrator tries to use an upperclass Boston accent. It is so bad that it is grating. I don’t know if I can finish the book because it is so annoying.

annoyed

Story was good. The narrator was distracting....every A at the end of a word was pronounced er! Anner, Rashimer, and so many more, I had to replay many times to figure out what word she was saying. Annoying. I've listened to another book by the same narrator and she was perfect! MAYBE an uneducated person would speak like that, but not the character Anna. Sorry :/

A Fun Read

This is a fun, well performed, book. If you are looking for something relaxing and light, and if you enjoy English country house mysteries, this is a good one for you.

Worst American accent ever.

“Anner” over and over as if the narration was Katherine Hepburn or FDR. Story was fine, but the accent drove me bonkers.

A. A-K

Not Maillet’s best. Figured it out way too early.
Also as the narrator was supposed to be an American, a reader that was an American or at least a passable American accent would have been less irritating.

Terrible

I really have like GM Malliet’s other books but this was really bad. All the characters are completely unlikable. The editing on the audio has several errors. The US accent and pronunciation off in several places—tough when the narrator is supposed to be from the USA. I can’t believe I even made it through to the end just to be rewarded with a completely predictable roll-your-eye ending.

Did Not Meet Expectations

First, this was hard to listen to as the narrator’s accent was inconsistent and sounded more like the character was from Jersey than from Maine. I could see her picking up some British pronunciations given the time she’d lived there, but some were neither British or American.
Second, I think we were to feel sorry for the main character and take her side. Then we would be shocked at the end. But, she was unlikeable from the beginning. There are a few clues scattered about, but the plot seems rushed at near. The final reveal left me regretting that justice wasn’t done.

Not Worth Buying

Horrible reader - she sounds like she's trying to fake an American accent, but every so often she slips into British English. And she talks SO fast - like she's breathlessly telling her story. I gave up after about an hour.

Could have been better

The premise is great. The telling not so much.
The story has needless repetitions, on the one hand, and "missing bits" on the other. While this is likely intentional, it seems to be disorganized.
The narration is good, but the narator is not credible as a supposed American. The accent just isn't convincing.

Big Disappointment- couldn’t finish it!

I was looking for something light and entertaining in the British mystery genre and since I had enjoyed other books by this author I took a plunge on his new release that didn’t have any reviews yet. Big mistake! The description sounded fine but once I started listening I had a hard time getting into it. This only got worse as I found the main character both not very likable and not very believable. Her actions didn’t seem plausible- and after I kept listening I realized I didn’t care about what happened next. Blah. The narrator was also wrong for the book and added to my lack of interest. The 1st person main character was supposed to be an American- but whatever accent the narrator used it didn’t ring true to the character. Life’s too short for bad books so I stopped listening after a couple of hours and returned it. Save your credit! I do like the other books by this author in his Max Tudor series but if I had read this book first (not Max Tudor) I think I would have avoided the author in the future!
