  • What Happened to Made in USA?
    Feb 29 2024

Until the 1980s, a lot of what we bought was made here from companies based here in the US. Now? Not so much. Sure, we still make plenty of stuff, but there are a lot of things we used to make here, entire categories of stuff, that we just don’t anymore. From what I understand similar situations have played out in the UK and other countries, too. Why is that? What happened?

  • The Problem With Your Refrigerator
    Feb 4 2024
Refrigerators— things that used to have an expected life of 15 years at the minimum— aren't lasting like they used to. Here's why.  @stevelehto  just posted a video about the epidemic of bad refrigerators last week, and because I’m weird, I wanted to expand upon that and dig into why things aren’t lasting like they used to. If you’ve bought a new fridge recently or are thinking about buying one, here’s why it might not last as long as your old one…and by extension how you can improve your chances of getting one that does. • Are EVs Worth It?
    Jan 26 2024
Are electric vehicles from Tesla, GM, Polestar, BYD, Volkswagen, and the like over-hyped? Are they "worth it" for the planet and your wallet? Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZSkEs5JxE0Q Electric cars are becoming more and more common. If you live in a major city, they’re everywhere, and they’ve got a lot going for them. Imagine never having to visit a gas station, or anything resembling one, except when you go on a road trip. With an electric car, you just walk out of your house in the morning, unplug, and you’ve got a full tank. If you drive your car approximately 11,000 miles a year, the average miles traveled per vehicle in the US according to the latest available numbers from 2021, or about 30 miles per day, you probably don’t even have to charge more than a few times a week. And if you’ve got solar panels on your house, you can feel all warm and snuggly that you’re charging your car with clean energy. Sounds awesome! But are they right for everyone?
