Publisher's Summary

Welcome to the Orthodox Church - its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: listeners learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to "venerate" an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It's the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even listeners who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-listen-to and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

Oh my! Everything I hoped, and SO much more!

I wanted to learn more about the Orthodox faith and practices, and this book certainly gave me a whole lot to think about and research. The author/reader's style is the best I've ever heard in an audio book. I never got bore with this book - not once.

I wept. I laughed. I wept some more, at the beauty of this faith. When the book was finally over, I exclaimed out loud, "No!!"

This lengthy book has left me wanting so much more.

If you could sum up Welcome to the Orthodox Church in three words, what would they be?

Orthodoxy is a treasure! "Dig for it!"

What was one of the most memorable moments of Welcome to the Orthodox Church?

The Conclusion puts it all into perspective.

Have you listened to any of Frederica Mathewes-Green’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No - this is the first of more to come.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If you mean turning the bright light on in a world of half-lit images, then yes. Frederica's insight and simple explanations answered questions I didn't know I had.

Any additional comments?

This is a must read for the serious religious scholar to casual wonderer looking for a glimpse of the Church Jesus the Christ breathed into existence.

Would be best if someone else was reading

I love her writing but not her performance. She is so soft spoken that she frequently trails off to inaudible on the last word of a sentence. This is the first book of hers that I've 'read' on Audible. I wonder if her performance has improved since then.

Frederick Matthews-Greene opens the doors to the Ancient Church through

Frederick Matthews-Greene opens the doors to the Ancient Church through her intelligence, thoughtful examples, humbleness and gentle voice. I’ve learned much through this introduction to Orthodoxy. This book covers some many questions I had and many I hadn’t thought to ask yet. I’m grateful for her thorough understanding of this subject and her gentle and learned spirit.

So informative with great storytelling

I completely adore Frederica’s books because she has such an engaging way of writing about the Orthodox Church. I love how informative this book was and it was so neat to have a virtual Orthodox parish to join into. Her storytelling is fantastic and I just love listening to her voice.

Excellent in every way!

As a cradle Orthodox Christian, I have been exposed to a lifetime of Church teachings. One can sometimes feel trapped between East and West. This lovely audiobook has helped clarify and somehow “organize” this complex and yet most basic of religions for me. Thank you Frederica Mathews-Greene! This volume is a “must-read/listen” for converts, inquirers, and veteran Orthodox alike.

Excellent introduction to Orthodox Christianity

The author has a way of illuminating the subject and jelping to show it through a historical perspective as well as giving you an understanding of how it is currently practiced.

Very interesting

I really enjoyed this book. If any book can give you a feel for a church, this book goes a long way down that path. The only way to really know is to go and be part, but this book gets you as close as one can get without actually being there. She hits on all the theological and historical key points along the way.
