Publisher's summary

We Are Water is a disquieting and ultimately uplifting audiobook about a marriage, a family, and human resilience in the face of tragedy, from Wally Lamb, the New York Times best-selling author of The Hour I First Believed and I Know This Much is True.

After 27 years of marriage and three children, Anna Oh - wife, mother, outsider artist - has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her success. They plan to wed in the Oh family's hometown of Three Rivers in Connecticut. But the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora's Box of toxic secrets - dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs' lives.

We Are Water is a layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs: nonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. It is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.

With humor and compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience and the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

The complete list of narrators includes Robin Miles and Sandy Rustin.

My Hopes Fulfilled!

I waited patiently for the release of this one, and it did not disappoint. The performances are excellent, the characters complex, and the story simply swept me away. Chock full of heart and human frailty.

Another great book from Wally

Very engaging sort line, enjoy how the author ties past and present together. Storyline was really good. Only thing I didn't like was the female reader for Anne / Anna - seem to be a bit dramatic when not needed. Wally Lamb did an excellent job as Orion and Kent (he was really creepy sounding). Love Wally Lambs other books.

Will not disappoint Wally Lamb fans!

Any additional comments?

I love a book that I cannot guess the ending and Wally Lamb always sneaks in a strong finish for his books. Disturbing characters that will creep you out for days... Not my favorite of his books, but a book worth jumping into.

Unexpected

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I have read Wally Lamb before. This book starts out slow, but after a couple of chapters I couldn't wait to hear the next one.

An intense & complex family story

I love Wally Lamb novels. He is an excellent storyteller and it’s so easy to get lost in his books. At times, this novel was very difficult to listen to, but good stories are like life- impossible at times & full of possibility the next. As a side note I loved that Wally Lamb narrated the role of Orion. He did it perfectly!

slow at times but enjoyed

The story was really sad at times. .. felt like I should have called my own therapist! I found Annie's character voice to be a bit overdone and sometimes annoying. The story is poignant to life's emotional being and health as Wally Lamb's stories usually are. Good read, just make sure you are in a happy place before you begin because the are intense moments.

Wally Lamb - PLEASE WRITE MORE!!!

I love Wally Lamb's writing - it's dark and deep. He explores areas of the human condition that we would rather not talk about or think about - from mental illness to incest. Every family has it's problems - and Wally Lamb does an excellent job at bringing you into the inner circle of these families. I likes the narration also - usually I do not like too many narrators in one story - but all of these people bring to the book a different quality - I have also found that authors are not the best narrators - but Mr. Lamb has proven me wrong - I like his voice.

Never disappoints

True to all his writings, We Are Water is captivating and pulls you in right from the beginning. The narration is superb and I felt as though I was walking alongside each character throughout every chapter. Wally has yet again put out a superb book and I highly recommend adding this to your collection.

Wally Lamb hits it out of the park, again!

If you could sum up We Are Water in three words, what would they be?

Wally Lamb weaves themes of child sexual abuse and loss into a very interesting tale about artists. He gives back stories on the characters as the plot moves forward, and alternately narrates in the first person voice of 3 of the main characters.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The book had several alternating narrators, including the author, which made the listening very enjoyable.
