Decent trilogy ending, narrator woeful
The book itself kind of uses the same composition as The God's of Mars only more characters brought along and doesn't touch on/ expose the Martian belief system. John Carter is always fighting and trying to get back to Dejah but a various color of Martian group that was previously unheard of gets in the way and is harsh and more fierce than the last color of martian. It is still a story full of adventure. It is a nice change of pace compared to "I guess I'm just so desireable by all the ladies and the pretty much the best fighter around in a rather effortless fashion" to more of a reliance upon others for a change. Though not quite as much.
The narrator on the other hand was not as wonderful as the fabulous Harry Shaw. Harry Shaw sold out for his role. Toby Scott McLellan phoned this effort in. Barely tried to get into a character via voice, tone or accent. Many pronunciations of various character names or settings were pronounced different from the previous books. That may not be so much the narrator's fault as more the publishing not getting everyone on the same page for continuity's sake. The editing was terrible/non-existent. Its a shame we couldn't round out the trilogy with Harry Shaw. This was a magnificent and fantastical adventure not similar to many other book series out there. I don't know if I will continue on with the other 8 books of the Barsoom series due to John Carter being phased out. Was a fun ride but I couldn't really get into this one for the narrators lack of passion/effort alone.
