Publisher's summary

A harrowing exploration of the collapse of American diplomacy and the abdication of global leadership.

American diplomacy is under siege. Offices across the State Department sit empty while abroad, the military-industrial complex has assumed the work once undertaken by peacemakers. We're becoming a nation that shoots first and asks questions later.

In an astonishing account ranging from Washington, DC, to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Korea in the years since 9/11, acclaimed journalist and former diplomat Ronan Farrow illuminates one of the most consequential and poorly understood changes in American history. His firsthand experience in the State Department affords a personal look at some of the last standard-bearers of traditional statecraft, including Richard Holbrooke, who made peace in Bosnia and died while trying to do so in Afghanistan. Farrow's narrative is richly informed by interviews with whistle-blowers, policymakers, and a warlord, from Henry Kissinger to Hillary Clinton. Diplomacy, Farrow argues, has declined after decades of political cowardice, shortsightedness, and outright malice - but it may just offer America a way out of a world at war.

So, so good. Must listen for history and current affair buffs

Ronan Farrow is truly shaping up to be
one of the best non-fiction writers of our time. This book was riveting - has the movie been optioned yet?? Because this title is certainly as interesting as any of Aaron Sorkin’s screenplays. String recommend.

Our global role for success in foreign diplomacy

War on Peace was very informative on the details of US foreign diplomacy abroad and likewise the importance of holding other country's diplomatic interest here in the US to account as well. Ronan Farrow's landscape was pretty expansive with the amount of time he spent with Richard Holbrooke to the time afterwards that he spent writing this book. He sought to explain how nuanced the relationships we have with other countries are and why it's so important to sit down and talk with goals that have everyone's interest at heart. Ending war through diplomacy and military might if all else fails.

Interesting Read

Interesting account of the goings-on inside the State Department. I found that this was not a listen i could easily play in the background while working on something else - I had to pay close attention or get lost in the names!

Must Read

I listened to War On Peace pretty much straight through. Ronan Farrow's you are there account of his time in the State Department and after right up to almost this day is the tragic story of every President since Reagan trading peace and diplomacy for militarism and war. If you read history, the implications of this are terrifying.

Fantastic reading experience!

This young man is brilliant and ethical. Remarkably, he also can write exceptionally well. The research and work/life experience that serve as a foundation to the book represent sincere commitment to the values that do,in fact, make ours a great country. Please read. You will enjoy it and be smarter at the end.

Extraordinary history and analysis

As a lawyer and avid student of government and history I have read hundreds of books on the social sciences. This is easily one of the best. Shockingly even-handed and well-written this work is a must-read for anyone who cares about the planet.

Had hopes it held answers

I had hoped it would be more exciting and reveal more interesting facts. I may attempt to listen again when I have fewer distractions.
