Lying in a French hospital recovering from wounds, WWII Sergeant David Jordan drifts in and out of a morphine haze between surgeries to relive his unending war experience.

He goes from the swampy training camp in Florida to the quaint English countryside of narrow lanes, hedgerows and cobblestones to snipers, artillery, cold foxholes in France and the quiet village where all hell broke loose.

Mingled with these recollections are the tall Sequoias of his youth and the dream of sailing a boat, salt spray in his face, on the open ocean where everything is deep and clean.
