For 12-year-old Peter Lundstrom, the Norwegian winter of 1940 begins like any other. When he isn’t in school, he spends the cold days outside, going sledding in the deep snow of his mountain village. Story
The powerful new novel from the master storyteller - inspired by the true story of one man who might have stopped World War II. It's 1940. The train is under attacks from German fighters. In the darkness, sheltering in a railway tunnel, the stranger in the carriage with Barney and his mother tells them a story to pass the time. And what a story. The story of a young man, a young soldier in the trenches of World War I who, on the spur of the moment, had done what he thought was the right thing.

Publisher's summary
Michael Morpurgo’s classic tale, capturing the power of the human spirit.
First published back in 1982, War Horse has taken the world by storm. The book was adapted to the stage and was performed at the National Theatre and on Broadway. This full and unabridged edition is beautifully performed here by the National Theatre’s first Albert, OIivier-award-winner Luke Treadaway.
At the outbreak of World War 1, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to the trenches to find him and bring him home.

Great book for a middle schooler
Would you listen to War Horse again? Why?
Yes, I'd listen to War Horse again. Knowing everything that happened, I could listen to it from another perspective and catch details that I didn't the first time. It was a quick moving story and enjoyable, even though it was stressful at times.
What other book might you compare War Horse to and why?
Black Beauty, Black Stallion, Animal Farm, A Dog's Life
Written from the animals point of view
Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite was when Joey is reunited with Albert; an excellent example of dramatic irony
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
when Joey and Albert were reunited
Any additional comments?
Showed most of the soldiers unhappy that they were soldiers; did not glamorize war, a happy ending, true story, movie to compare/contrast later
