Publisher's summary

Will you join or will you die? The third option includes monsters.

The war has been going on since long before I was born.

Teado is a Changer, a shape-shifting military asset trained to win wars. His platoon has been stationed in the Bavares high plains for years, stranded. As they ration supplies and scan the airwaves for news, any news, their numbers dwindle. He's not sure how much time they have left.

Desperate and starving, armed with aging, faulty equipment, the team jumps at the chance for a risky resupply mission, even if it means not all of them might come back. What they discover could change the course of the war.

Too subtle magic, too shallow characters

I am underwhelmed. The story drops you into a never ending war in a world with illusionists and shapeshifters, forecasts a desperate mission, then speeds thru with only the broadest brushstrokes.
I never invested in the plot or the characters.

For a better military monster novella, Nicholas Sansbury Smith has 1.5 hr Extinction Lost on sale now.

A surprisingly interesting short story.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this short story. I went in blind and it took me a little while to understand the world being built, but the level of character development for our male MC - for his team actually- was pretty amazing.

There are relationships, teamwork, suspense, betrayal, and desperate suicidal war......That is quite a bit for a story this length.

This is one short story that I would read more of......

Fantastic characters & story

As a new MCClellan fan who has devoured all of the Powder
Mage stories available, I thought I’d look into tje rest of his catalog until the December 2019 release of the Powder Mage finale. I loved this story & it had some original elements uncommon in fanatsy today (especially the geographical setting)...I’d love to see more of this world & these characters. Hoping this was just a launching pad for something longer & more in-depth!

Fantastic Sorry Sorry, Left Hungry for More

As always, incredible storytelling and world building. I wish it was a full novel instead of a short story. phenomenal production, as well.
