Betty Zane strays from the usual Western tale, which usually has a man as the hero. Betty is brave and heroic, but never fear - there is a sweetheart to be reunited with in the end. Life along the Ohio River in frontier days is authentically depicted in this saga. The pioneer settlement of Fort Henry is the setting for the action involving traitors, Indian attacks, and a catastrophic fire.

To the Last Man is Zane Grey's archetypal tale of a bitter feud between two unforgiving factions: the ranchers led by Jean Isbel and, on the other side, Lee Jorth and his band of cattle rustlers. In the grip of a relentless code of loyalty to their own people, they fight the war of the Tonto Basin, desperately, doggedly, to the last man, neither side seeing the futility of it until it is too late.

Jack Hare, a tough, young cowboy, owes his life to August Naab, the stern but kind old settler who rescued him from sure death and offered him refuge. But Hare soon learns that Naab's Utah ranch is little more than an island paradise surrounded by a sea of danger. Hare must meet the challenge of a brazen gang of cattle thieves and of a corrupt rancher who attempts to steal Naab's water rights. But Hare faces even greater danger when he fights for the woman he loves: Mescal, the slender half-Navajo shepherdess who is already promised in marriage to Naab's firstborn son. Hare knows he must stop the marriage but he can't kill the son of his benefactor - that is, until a gun battle with a band of rustlers brings the two face-to-face over drawn pistols!

Publisher's summary
A western adventure becomes a journey of expiation and redemption.
Adam flees to the desert to save his life, and discovers the need to save his soul. In the searing heat of Death Valley, lonely land of prospectors and hermits, he confronts his baser instincts as he struggles to survive, striving to rise above them.
Wanderer of the Wasteland is Zane Grey’s most personal novel: a thinly veiled autobiography written in remarkably poetic language. Filled with colorful characters, and vibrant descriptions of the southwestern desert landscape he so loved, this is the story of one man’s internal battle to save his better self, or die trying.

Love MICHAel Kramer; hated the book
At least this book is aptly named: about the only thing the author does is describe the desert. I thought I liked Zane Grey, but this is one of the only books I've quit in the middle -- and I've been listening to books on tape and Audible since 1992.

Story
To the Last Man is Zane Grey's archetypal tale of a bitter feud between two unforgiving factions: the ranchers led by Jean Isbel and, on the other side, Lee Jorth and his band of cattle rustlers. In the grip of a relentless code of loyalty to their own people, they fight the war of the Tonto Basin, desperately, doggedly, to the last man, neither side seeing the futility of it until it is too late.

Here are four short stories from Zane Grey, the acclaimed author of Western adventures and frontier characters. Living in the ruthless solitude of the desert, range, or mountains, the men in these four stories are all on personal journeys. In "The Camp Robber", a man has driven his wife away and yearns for reconciliation. "Amber's Mirage" reveals an old man's realization of the corrupting power of gold when up against young love.Â

Story
Peter Dunstan is a big rancher who wants to become bigger, to control more land. So when he buys Dr. Henry Morgan's ranchland that has been unsuccessfully converted to farming, it is his intention to return it to open range. The only stipulation the doctor makes is that Dunstan must retain Sandy Sweyn, who has more or less been Dr. Morgan's ward. Though the man is of age, he is generally considered a half-wit, even by the doctor. Still, Sandy has a fabulous gift: He can communicate with animals.
