Editorial reviews

Editors Select, December 2017

Cheryl Richardson's new book feels different from her previous works; she opens up a bit about her own challenges during a few tough years and how she needed to rethink every aspect of her own life in order to reestablish her balance. The concept of Waking Up in Winter appealed to me - I definitely feel the exhaustion of the advancing cold, and Cheryl Richardson will always deliver a positive, actionable message. She is a seasoned and reassuring narrator, and the audiobook includes a special section at the end to spark self-discovery. If, like me, you are a bit resistant to self-help books but also need a little inspiration in December, Cheryl Richardson might be the coach for you this season. —Christina, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Internationally recognized coach and New York Times best-selling author Cheryl Richardson has toured the world empowering others to make lasting change. But when Richardson's own life no longer worked as it once had, a persistent inner voice offered unmistakable guidance: It was time to reevaluate her life to uncover what really mattered.

Waking Up in Winter is the candid and revelatory account of how at midlife, Richardson found renewed contentment and purpose through a heroic inward journey. The unfolding story, told through intimate journal entries, follows Richardson from the first gentle nudges of change to a thoughtfully reimagined life - a soulful spring awakening.

With an experienced coach's intuition and an artist's eye, Richardson reexamines everything - her marriage, her work, her friendships, and her priorities - gracefully shedding parts of the self that no longer serve along the way.

In the end she not only discovers what really matters at midlife; she invites readers to join her in the inquiry process by providing thought-provoking questions designed to usher them through their own seasons of transformation.

Offering up Richardson's most powerful teaching tool yet - her own life - Waking Up in Winter takes listeners on a brave spiritual adventure that shows us all how to live a more authentic and meaningful life.

Special bonus material: Cheryl has included a special section in this audio program where she discusses the series of questions at the end of the book. These questions (and the discussion) are meant to encourage your own transformational journey. You can use them with a journal, in discussions with a friend or support partner, or with your book group.

Perfect Timing!

I began the deeper part of my healing journey with Cheryl Richardson and her book, Take Time for Your Life… Here I am many years later so grateful for so much and so able to count my blessings, living while I’m alive. This is big for someone who had a death wish in her 20s and 30s and early 40s. The gentle insights into her life now and how she’s turning toward the messages and transitions that come in mid-life felt like an affirmation of my own experience, like a walk of acknowledgement and appreciation with an old friend. Waking Up In Winter was a perfect companion for me as I’m on a very similar journey and offer my clients similar guidance and companionship. It reminded me not to underestimate the importance of these kinds of conversations. Thank you for bringing a softness, beauty and sense of acceptance to that process...and this stage of life.

Brilliant job Cheryl!

Each of Cheryl's books have inspired me to know myself at an even deeper level. As a psychotherapist I need to be self cared for to the brim!... so that I can give from a sustained deep well within. Waking up in Winter has nourished my soul with beautiful poetic writing and deep meaningful sharing of Cheryl's own heart through her life experiences. I am grateful.

Great Book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I feel like I am heading into this time in my life, where I am experiencing a deep internal shift. As I get older I am looking for more depth and meaning, with each passing year it is becoming more important to listen to my heart and body. GREAT book, I really loved it, Cheryl did a great job.

AudioIs glitchy in the second half of the recording

I enjoyed this book very much. I especially loved listening to it while driving backroads in my tiny part of New England. Cheryl’s voice and her story really flowed with the landscape and it helped me to feel more connected to her thoughts and ideas. However, the last hour or so has a terrible repeating glitch, where the first sound in a new sentence is cut off and it made listening almost unbearable. Michael becomes ichael for example- it really just took me right out of the story and the feeling. I listen on my iPhone with a Bluetooth speaker, and I heard this with just my phone only, through speakers in both my car and phone, and on my laptop.

this book came along just when I needed it

At first I felt like Cheryl wasn't really digging deep but as the journals went on the story she was telling about her life became deeper and clearer and more nuanced. I came on age in the Hay House radio era of the 2000s when I thought people like Cheryl Richardson and Louise Hay and Wayne Dyer probably lead perfect internal lives. It's very important that as the self help gurus age they are acknowledging the limitations of that outward success in creating internal contentment. Even if you touch and change thousands of lives, you are still you, and you still need to find your own happiness. I think that's a hugely helpful to know.

Tremendously inspiring!

Where does Waking Up in Winter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Listening to Cheryl Richardson read her journal aloud is very powerful. Her soothing voice, familiar to so many, sharing her most personal struggles, evokes a sense of familiarity with the listener.

What other book might you compare Waking Up in Winter to and why?

Not sure I've read a book quite like this one. Written in journal form, this book allows the listener to learn through Cheryl's personal journey. As she embraces the things that bring her joy, she evaluates and lets go of things that no longer benefit her life and mesh with her beliefs. Cheryl shows us that the journey to become true to yourself and find inner peace is never over, but forever evolving. She does the work required to face these new realizations head on, and through her example the reader will walk away with inspiration, ideas, and tools to help them journey through their life transformations.

Have you listened to any of Cheryl Richardson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I have listened to other readings by Cheryl Richardson. Cheryl always draws the listener in close with her soothing voice and honesty. As usual, she does not disappoint. Spoken with emotion and passion, Cheryl gives the listener the sense of being a confidante, sharing her personal thoughts, concerns and realizations.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Waking Up in Winter?

I am working to become more aware of what depletes my energy, as well as what replenishes my soul. I am encouraged to eliminate things, habits, and people that no longer serve my well-being.
