Publisher's summary

Diana Gabaldon's magnificent historical saga, begun with Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, continues with this New York Times best seller. Set in the intriguing Scotland of 200 years ago, the third installment in the romantic adventures of Jamie and Claire is as compelling as the first. Now that Claire knows Jamie survived the slaughter at Culloden, she is faced with the most difficult decision of her life. She aches to travel back through time again to find the love of her life, but, in order to do that, she must leave their daughter behind. It has been 20 years since she and Jamie were forced to separate. Can she risk everything, maybe even her life, on a gamble that their love has withstood the long, rigorous test of time?

Diana Gabaldon's powerful, witty, and heroic characters lend themselves well to the rich, melodic narration accorded them by Davina Porter. Under her spell, listeners find themselves transported back through time to exciting, faraway places alive with people they would enjoy knowing.

Critic reviews

"Triumphant....Her use of historical detail and truly adult love story confirm Gabaldon as a superior writer." (Publishers Weekly)

Featured Article: Claire Fraser—An Outlander Character Guide

Claire Fraser is the central character, first-person narrator, and driving force of Diana Gabaldon's epic Outlander series. As ambitious and enormous as the world of Outlander is, it’s the characters and their relationships that make the story so compelling. At its heart is the love shared between Claire and Jamie, two people who ultimately would not let time or distance—even hundreds of years—keep them apart.

My favorite Gabaldon book

This is my favorite book out of this series. You have to read Outlander to understand what is going on but trust me its well worth it. The characters become like friends and you find yourself caring about them and there story while learning a great deal about Scottish history. Outstanding book.

7 Stars!! Brilliant!!

I now have my husband just as hooked on the saga of Jamie and Claire as I am (except I actually went out and bought the printed books to read because Audible only has the 1st three unabridged books). DO NOT try and make do with the abridged versions because they are awful. If you must wait-they will be worth it. The first 3 are for download here (about 40 hours each). They are long but you are still wanting more. My husband and I listen to a little bit every time we get in the car together (I've already listened to them all).
Davina Porter brings them all to life-you can tell who is talking without the "he said-she said" at the end of the sentances.

Hurry up! I want them all!

I LOVE these books! Davina Porter is AMAZING and brings all the characters to life in this series. I listen to them about once a year and cannot wait to have them ALL on my ipod (right now they are on tapes...ugh!) You will not be disappointed (as long as you get the UNABRIDGED version..you won't want to miss a minute of this story!)

Hurry up Audible...I already need the next one!

Couldn't love it any more

I'm not sure who I love more - Diana Gabaldon or Davina Porter.

They are perfectly suited for one another and the product of their collaboration is a treasure.

Voyager was not as enjoyable as Outlander, but I still enjoyed it immensely.

I love Jamie and Claire

I just finished listening to Voyager and was crushed to think my adventures with Jamie and Claire were over. To my pleasant surprise I found that there are three more books. To my consternation, they are abridged and narrated by someone other than Davina Porter. She is Jamie and Claire. In Ms. Porter's profile she won an award for her narration of "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" so I know it is out there. I hope the other two books are also out there, unabridged and narrated by Davina Porter.
On another note, I just recommended the Outlander series to my mom. This is definitely one of the best series I've come across in a long time. The pairing of Diana Gabaldon's writing and Davina Porter's narration is perfect. All the characters come to life. I found myself laughing out loud at some scenes and smiling wistfully at others. Do yourself a favor and listen to this book and the two that precede it.

I Agree

This was better than I expected. Let's face it, what a monumental task to write such a long book and then make it part of a series with all seven (?) of them being just as long ...and just as captivating!

The narration is outstanding as there is no question as to who is talking and what they are feeling!

I also must agree that there was just a little too much breathless sensuality in this one. I mean, I get it. They love each other, but every time (and pretty frequently for mature adults) is not like going over Niagara Falls!

A Winner!

Diana Gabaldon is simply the best author there is. Her books are emotionally charged and have you wanting more and more. I was thrilled that Audible got the unabridged versions of Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. Do not EVER get the abridged versions. There is simply too much left out. I can't wait for the unabridged versions of Drums of Autumn, Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Give these books a try, you wont be sorry.

Necessary (but painful) chapter in the saga

Davina Porter is again fabulous and flawless in her reading of this book. The story itself is, however, painful for me and is my least favorite in the series. The main character falls from grace and in my opinion never recovers fully to his previous stature as a truly admirable character. I also felt that some of the plot points were contrived and several main characters were behaving in ways that were distinctly inconsistent with the characters the author had so faithfully and deeply developed in earlier books. Still, one has to endure this volume in order to get to the next one -- Drums of Autumn. And ultimately, it's worth it.

Unimpressed...

I am now done with this series.
This third book went back to the same over the top sexual descriptions as in the first book. It's unnecessary and does nothing to further the story of the book. If you like harlequin romance novels - then this might be the book for you. If you're looking for an action/adventure, then I would keep looking elsewhere and save your credit.
Claire became a really annoying main character in this third book. She acted thoughtlessly and irrationally most of the time. She was judgmental and dramatic and exasperating.
Overall, I was looking forward to the end to this story. I'm not interested in continuing to follow the sexual escapades of Claire & Jaime.

The Best of Listening

So well written and so well read. It has been a pleasure to come back to these books and having read them a few years back to listen to them. The narrator is just supreme, it's like listening /watching a drama. Even though a little far fetched the number of adventures Jamie and Claire find themselves in, Gabaldon still makes it believable. Loved it. Well done to Audible for making these available.
