Publisher's Summary

What goes on inside a great narrator to make them great? This groundbreaking work answers this question by exploring the psychophysical aspect of voiceover. The listener is given a bird’s-eye view of the professional narrator’s mental, physical, and vocal ”machinery” as well as an in-depth look at the underlying currents that power it: energy, intention, emotion, connection, and flow. Ideal for all - from novice to seasoned voiceover pro - Voiceover Narration inspires the listener to gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of voiceover performance within each narration subgenre, including audiobooks, corporate films, documentaries, e-learning, and explainer videos. With wisdom, humor, and personal anecdotes, Dian Perry shares everything she has learned about narration from decades as a voice actor and teacher. Also included is a collection of sample narration text, performed by a variety of talented guest artists: Ana Clements, Mike Cooper, Brad Hyland, Sam Mowry, Bethan Dixon Bate, Rory Barnett, Stephane Cornicard, Jessica Maston, Marilena Gant, Kerry Hutchinson, and Leonie Schliesing.

Voiceover Narration is a much-needed handbook that guides voice actors in creating and delivering more intuitive voiceover performances.

Dian Perry is a widely respected US voice actor, teacher, and voiceover coach based in the UK. She has over 23 years’ experience in the voiceover industry and is a three-time Voice Arts® Award nominee. She holds a teaching qualification and has facilitated courses and workshops in London, Manchester, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Staffordshire University, and Latvia as part of the Riga International Film Festival. She also conducts one-to-one coaching sessions online and from The Shed Studio in London.

Use woo and magic to make yourself a better actor!

Realistically speaking (no pun intended) I don't think I would have paid for this if I'd known how much the author was going to use pseudo-science and min-understanding of actual science to talk about how you should use magic to improve your VO acting...

Still... Once you get past that stuff, there _is_ a good deal of very good information, and it's worth reading/listening to.

Not just another VO and audiobook narration book

I have listened to many excellent audiobooks that teach voiceover and audiobook narration. All of them had something valuable to offer. What made this book different and special for me was the whole being approach (for lack of a better term) of Dian Perry's teaching. Not at all "pseudoscience" (as another reviewer labeled it) this book approaches audiobook narration & VO work from a mind/body/spirit perspective. If you practice meditation, T'ai Chi, Yoga, or any spiritual practice that promotes bringing one's entire being into every activity, then this book will likely make a lot of sense to you. Of course, this approach will not work for everyone, but for me, Dian Perry's approach offered a fresh perspective on VO and audiobook narration that I found illuminating, and that no other book I have encountered on this subject has been able to provide.

Invaluable

As someone who is starting his journey in the world of voice narration I have found the advice and examples incredibly useful and fully intend to implement them into my work. It talks about things you wouldn’t think to ask such as pitfalls and studio etiquette and also covers a lot of basics which I have found invaluable to guide me. Thank you.

Thoroughly enjoying this excellent book!

You know you are really enjoying a book when you feel compelled to rewind a chapter just to make sure everything you have been told has properly sunk in! This is the case with this excellent book - and I'm not even a voice over artist! Dian Perry has a wonderful insight into her craft - but her words are applicable to many areas of life - from authenticity to connection, energy to intuition, this book has a philosophy all of it's own. Hearing by audio gives it a greater depth as the narrator / writer really comes into her own and her voice is mesmerising. I never thought I would read a book like this - but so glad I have - it's been a joy!

4th Dimension from the Paperback

I bought the paperback version first and although I knew what the book was about, I was surprised at how much more I learnt by hearing it as well as reading it.

The practice scripts especially stood out as these were brought to life by students' and colleagues' voices to be able to demonstrate how to read, as well as hear Dian's coaching style to bring out the emotion of the reading and connect with the listener.

Having listened to the audio book it has given me a fourth dimension from the paperback that I wasn't expecting!
