Publisher's Summary
Elena has found the power in her voice - now she must decide how to use it
Finally accepted as a mage, Elena struggles with her commonborn roots. And when disaster strikes the kingdom, she can't shrug off the death toll as the mageborn have always done. Yet the limitations of her spoken magic hold her back - both in saving lives among the people and in competitions in the Academy's arena.
In desperation she turns to an unlikely source of assistance - Prince Lucas. But just as she begins to master her powers, she finds herself the pawn of stronger forces.
With everything she's struggled for almost within her grasp, she must decide what - and who - is worth sacrificing to come into her full power and take her place among the mages.

A bit frustrating
I would like to see Eleanor grow a bit more. No one has a perfect life. There are always gray areas, not everything is black and white. She needs to start showing more understanding for all around her not just some. Her tunnel vision made the story too frustrating.

Great second book!
The sophomore installment of The Spoken Mage series further develops the world created by Melanie Cellier. We get a chance to leave the academy and see Elena and her classmates deal with an epidemic of green fever in another part of the country. Elena grows in relationships with the other mages and her powers. We also see her sacrifice herself for others as only she can do.
A terrific clean fantasy book by a great author.

Loved this series!
This series completely took me by surprise! I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it, but I was honestly so great! I never felt bored or lost. The characters were impossible not to feel connected to. I loved that the romance was there, but not overwhelming. Sometimes books that have battles in them can be overwhelming, but I thought the war scenes here were perfect. I loved the elements of magic, and the setting, both the palace and her family's village. Truly one of the best series I've read in a while.
*I bought the first book, but was given the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in exchange for an honest review.

Awesome
An engaging continuation of the story of Elena as she navigates her new status as the only spoken mage. Character development is wonderfully supported by the complex and intriguing plot. Just as with book one, narration was on point and only enhanced the work.
