Publisher's Summary

The highly anticipated spoken word poetry collection from Lana Del Rey, Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass

“'Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass' is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” (Lana Del Rey)

Lana Del Rey brings her breathtaking poetry to life in an unprecedented audiobook. In this stunning spoken word performance, Lana Del Rey reads 14 poems from her debut book Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning musician Jack Antonoff. Lana’s debut book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). This audiobook features Lana reading select poems from the book, including "LA Who Am I to Love You?", "The Land of 1,000 Fires", "Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving", "Never to Heaven", "Tessa DiPietro", "Happy", and several others. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator.

Better than expected

I was surprised at how moved it was. Lana Del Rey is one of my favorite artists and I've been so excited waiting to buy and listen. Even though I was expecting to like it I was really blown away. I don't really know what to say other than it's really worth your time and money to listen to it.

As Gorgeous As Her Best Works

This was absolutely incredible. I am still stunned and hypnotised at just how different the vibe of the audio version is different to the physical version. I found the instrumentals to perfectly encapsulate the aesthetics that she was laying down with the poetry. On top of this her dreamy and conversational tone is also perfect for the instrumentals. I described this book as a backstage dinner just because of how moving and casually artistic it is. I’d say if you’re a fan of her albums Honeymoon and Norman F***ing Rockwell, that you’ll love this gem too.

Another insight in the mind of Lana Del Rey

As a big fan of Lana’s music my opinion is kind of biased, but that’s to say that Lana’s music isn’t already poetry which feels like a lie, but wow. This book, whilst shorter than most, is a gentle stroll through to mind of Lana Del Rey, honesty, raw emotions and insecurities on full display. I was curious why the author for this book wasn’t Elizabeth Grant, but now I can see that it doesn’t feel like her story.

A strong start with ‘LA who am I to love you’, and emotional peaks with ‘SportCruiser’ (but maybe cause I could relate) before a roller coaster ending with ‘bare feet on linoleum’ asking a question where to go next. All I can hope for is it isn’t far, because I need more.

Lana’s voice is so gentle and beautiful to listen to, accompanied by Jack’s composition and this is an absolute gem.

perfect.

oh, just wait.
butter, beware.
smooth, lovely.
a brush of soft hair.
listen again, against fear, against more.
what's on offer, lovely.
better, but the same.
also more.

Yeah as an Aussie bloke, I don't have the language set to describe what I'm feeling here.
