Publisher's summary

Violence of Action is much more than the true, first-person accounts of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Global War on Terror. Within this audio are the heartfelt, firsthand accounts from and about the men who lived, fought, and died for their country, their regiment, and each other. Objective Rhino, Haditha Dam, recovering Jessica Lynch, the hunt for Zarqawi, the recovery of Extortion 17, and everything in between... These stories have been told many times in barracks rooms, at bar tables, and at backyard barbecues, but they have never before been shared with the general public. It is time for those stories to be heard.

So much more than just stories from a specific unit, this audiobook reveals the sights, smells, and emotions of everything that happens in war - good or bad. It will be seen as the quintessential, ageless work on the human condition in combat.

Great Book

Rarely do you hear or read stories of the Rangers but this book definitely sheds some light on their participation in the Iraqi and Afghan war. I did however notice that the narrator mispronounced several words and there was one chapter that was read by a woman portraying a deceased Rangers mother that I thought did not belong in this book. The chapter in question seemed more like religious propaganda rather than about the 75th. I actually skipped this chapter after listening to ten minutes of it. Other than that, I found the book to be very informative and hilarious at times. I recommend.

Excellent book but occasionally hard to follow.

The stories in this book are outstanding! The narrators do an excellent job, most of the time. The book is gripping and keeps your attention while conveying the emotions of war. The only thing I personally did not enjoy about this book, was SFC Domeij mothers account, simply because she is a deeply religious woman and she constantly quotes the bible. I personally despise religion and found it incredibly annoying, especially since her account lasts a damn hour. Other than that though, this is an excellent book!

Great story!

Great collection of stories! For me personally, the female narrator wasn't great, but the rest was very well done.

What It's LIke To Be a Ranger

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes indeed. I'm an old "yoostabee" Airborne Ranger from the Vietnam War era, and I enjoyed the young Rangers' points of view.

What did you like best about this story?

There are different stories told by different Rangers. There are a lot of similarities in their stories, but a lot of differences, too. They sound pretty typical of my days, and like some things never change - hurry up and wait; the incredible noise and confusion. The fact that the 75th Ranger Regiment took no more casualties than it did is pretty amazing.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

The stories are told by several different Rangers, and I enjoyed hearing all their stories.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had great difficulty getting through the story of the mother who lost her son.

Any additional comments?

There were so many acronyms used, and explained, it became a game with me to see if I could guess the meanings of the acronyms. I listened as I walked, and I'm sure I was smiling, because it was fun!

It was okay, but not quite what I was hoping for.

The 75th is a great group of guys, no matter what Bat they are... I was just hoping for a little more depth into some of the short stories. And some of the acronym's that we know how to pronounce, the narrators don't...... It makes it hard to flow with the story, because mentally I am correcting the way it's said and having my own inner dialogue. Some small issues for me personally. You may have none of these issues.
If you're looking for a deep story, this isn't for you. This is snippets of many warriors experiences.

meh...

Nothing spectacular, or even great. It's a collection of short combat action stories told in several monotone voices with the occasional and very misplaced testimonial from a family member. I've read a lot of books from this genre, and this is one to skip.

Worth it.

A little annoying as the narrator pronounces Military terms with slightly odd inflections but the stories are phenomenal.

Very moving.

As a peacetime soldier I never had to suffer the losses and heartache these men and families did.

3 star reason below

some of the content is overly exaggerated, no where in the military is a flak vest 80+ lbs. I personally found one of the narators soft way of talking irritating and annoying -- sounded out of breath like he was about to passout the whole time. If you're telling a story about warriors fighting wars then you ought to know that's one way not to narrate this story. ruined everything that's why I gave 3 starts

proper army lingo... learn it.

This was a pretty good book but I think it's disrespectful for the narrators to speak of soldiers and their rank by speaking the individual letters of abbreviations of a soldiers rank rather than what the abbreviations stand for. For example, SFC Jones is an abbreviation for Sargent First Class Jones and should be read that way... he's not a SFC, HE'S A SERGEANT FIRST CLASS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS THIS.! It is personally offensive to be referred to as a couple of letters rather than the rank we worked so hard and sacrificed so much to earn To the producers of this audiobook, please fix this in future productions.

Thank you,
Staff Sergeant (SSG) Jason Lowman
