I would recommend that they read the book. The narrator is too monotonous.

Yes. Unfortunately, narrator is monotonous and boring. Sounds like the science teacher in The Wonder Years.

Time with characters I love... as for the story,

To preface this I'm a long-term fan. I watched the show from episode 1, and I loved the idea of Veronica Mars books. However, for anyone with less exposure to the series, I could see this as being a very poorly paced book. A lot of the high action events we've seen through out most of the Veronica Mars world were absent in this book. It was much more procedural, and for that possibly more realistic, but also less surprising. I enjoyed spending time with characters that I've come to appreciate over the years, so that their new to Veronica Mars might not have the same patience.
Halfway through the book I suppose what was supposed to be a major twist seemed more like a lapse in observation on Veronica's part. This could be explained by a major issue weighing on her mind throughout the book, but is not like our usual girl. There were major jumps in time related to waiting for DNA results, that again realistic, caused the story to lose momentum.
Interactions with Logan were very sweet, even a squee moment when Veronica finally got her pony. One other aspect that kept me going was the portrayal of the military members and their dependents. This is not a major point in the book but, the accuracy and sympathy with which very real issues were dealt with in this novel, wear something a greatly enjoyed as a member of the US Navy myself.
Did I enjoy this as much as the first book? No. Would I recommend this book to a friend? I wouldn't start with this book but I still recommend the series.

Kristen Bell vs Rebecca Lowman

Rebecca Lowman is a great narrator. But after years of watching Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars & listening to the previous books narrated by Kristen Bell, Rebecca Lowman is not Veronica Mars. WEIRD to listen to. A great story!! And again, Rebecca Lowman is very good, she's just not Veronica.

Good story, bad narration

When I saw Kristen Bell didn't narrate this book, I was sad but not surprised. She didn't want to do it again, or she was too expensive. I was prepared to get over it and enjoy the time with my VM friends anyway. The very first thing I noticed was that the narrator uses the exact same voice I used to use when conducting deep relaxation sessions in the childbirth classes I used to teach. Many a couple fell asleep on the hard cold floor in response to my low, monotone voice. I only managed to stay awake because there was some inflection in the character voices. If you can't get Kristen for the next book, at least don't use this same person again.

It was fun visiting Neptune again. The story was consistent with what I want from Veronica: meeting old characters, the wonderful relationship between father and daughter, noir themes.

A Very Un-Veronica Narrator

I liked the book. The writing was great for what it is, a fun easy beach read. And it helps fill in some of the story gaps between the end of the movie and the new Hulu series, as does the previous book. I actually liked the storyline of this book better than the first. What earned this one a lower rating from me was the narrator.

While the first book was narrated by Kristen Bell, this one was narrated by someone else. And while that’s fine, their choice of narrator was odd. I don’t think you could find a narrator whose voice, tone, and style of speech was any further from the sharp, sarcastic, almost acidic voice of Veronica. Don’t get me wrong – she’s a great narrator in general, and she’d be wonderful narrating a book about Luna Lovegood, for example. But her slow, dreamy, almost stoned voice just made it very difficult to fall into this particular book. It took a long time for it to stop being distracting.
