Publisher's summary

Death. It's something that Ada Palomino has always known so well, having grown up in a house of horrors, surrounded by a family plagued by ghosts and demons and things that go bump in the night. But after the sudden and tragic death of her mother two years ago, death has never felt so personal. Or so close.

Now 18, Ada is trying to move on with her life, and the last month of summer holds nothing but sunshine and promises, with her first year at a Portland design school just around the bend. That is, until her increasingly violent and realistic dreams, dreams of other worlds, of portals and veils where her mother is tortured and souls bleed for mercy, start to blend into reality. Ada has to lean on her older sister, Perry, to try and make sense of it all, but even then, she's never felt more alone.

Then there's Jay. Tall, handsome, and deeply mysterious, Jay would be just another stranger, a familiar face on the bus, if it wasn't for the fact that Ada has met him before.

Every night. In every single dream. And the more that Ada is drawn to him in both worlds, the more she's in danger of losing everything - including her heart, and her very soul.

Critic reviews

"Nobody writes this genre as well as Karina Halle. In Veiled you have horror, romance, and humor, all mixed into a tale that will keep you reading, hiding beneath your covers, [and] giggling even as you tremble and quake." (Amy Harmon, New York Times best-selling author)

Ada

Of you enjoyed the Experiment in Terror series, then you'll enjoy reading about Ada all grown up. Ada is like Perry in so many ways, although she is still young she does mature a lot throughout this story. I also enjoyed the narrative.

Wow. Wow. Wow!!!!

Oh wow. This story was really good from start to finish. I absolutely enjoyed listening to this audiobook. I’m sad that it’s a standalone. But it’s ok, it’s still a really good story!!

Okay but...

This book was left with many unanswered questions. This is a stand alone book so I can not say maybe the answers are in the next book. Maybe if the author expands this book into a series and answers questions then it could work. As it is many things were introduced but never explained nor had a big impact on the book because it lacked content and any other mention.

I gave overall four stars which I feel is a bit generous, considering the many loose ends.

Performance, I absolutely loved! The narrator has many distinct voice for the characters. I always knew who was talking. I didn't give five stars because even though a great performance the sound was so low I would have to turn it up. Then she would go to normal sound that was much louder. I found myself needing to rewind so I could hear putting my phone to my ear to understand.

The story I gave three stars because the book was okay. There was some parts that were a slow lead up making me wonder what is even happening. When the events finally came to light they were lacking. Not all of the time but most of the time. Big events in the books when introduced seemed to fall flat. There was a large disconnect for me.

I like this authors other books. At least the ones I have read or listened to. I wouldn't give up on the author because she can write. I wouldn't give up the narrator but I do think editing should make the voices more phonetically balanced.

Awesome book, interesting narration

The book was good, and right on par with Halle’s early works in EIT. I loved the story. The narrator though, she wasn’t terrible. She had great pacing, but some volume problems. It’s like she would go from speaking in a normal voice to whispering in the next. It was just this side of annoying, especially when I rode on the DC metro, and had my headphones turned up all the way, and couldn’t hear her whispery bits. It’s like she would start the sentence and slowly fade away, her own personal echo. Still, the book was good, and were it not for the narrator volume changes, the narration would have been perfect

Most Amazing Book!

First time listening to this author and I have to say..AMAZING writing. And to top it all off Jo Raylan as narrator is the best. I absolutely love her voice and she plays all roles perfectly.

Spooky and Intense!

4 stars!

Wow Karina Halle blows my mind with her diversity as an author. I’ve never read paranormal or fantasy before. Trying to push myself to try new genres this year and wow she did not disappoint. This was a nail bitter. Spooky, gripping and intense writing! and Jo Raylan gave one of the best performances I have ever listened to in an audiobook! So incredible. Ada is 18 years old and just about to start college. She has recently lost her mother to death and has been having extremely vivid nightmares they feel real. Her dreams include Jay, a mysterious ginger. So when she runs into him in the street her hackles are up and she demands to know who he is. He was protective of her and vowed to keep her safe from the creatures of the demonic world. There are some real scary moments like voices in the closets and on other floors of the house. My heart was in my throat during those scenes! The romance in this blew me away. Such intensity and passion! It was a slow build which I love. I am intrigued about this world that Karina has created. Especially Ada’s sister Perry and her husband Dex and look forward to going back to reading their story.

Something is missing

I feel the story is missing something. The ending was left open for another book. I don't think I'll read or listen to any books that follow if that is case.

not worth listening but read it instead!

the narrator ruined the story. she slurred her words and mumbled through sentences. it was hard grasping the characters age as there was no change in tone.
