A Truly Great SF Series

Would you listen to Veil of Shadows again? Why?

I love good science fiction with well developed characters and plot, this series is perfect.

What does Veronica Giguere bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Probably one of the most talented female narrators of our time.

I just couldn't make myself care.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A few things would have made this four or five star story. (I'll talk about the narration later.)

Characters. I felt that the characters were not very far removed from cut-and-paste sci-fi tropes. I never found myself caring whether they would live or die. None of the character voices engaged me. I found their struggles were far too easily overcome when a little bit more work could have made them so much more sympathetic. The Princess, for example: torn apart and given invasive implants. No scarring. No long-lasting trauma rather than some bad dreams and her only worry seems to be that people will think she's a pig for eating so much food. (She doesn't gain weight either. I know a lot of ladies who would KILL for her problem. How does this make her sympathetic?) Rather than put her through the grinder and make her struggle through the ramifications, she seems to be given a free pass. I was disappointed by this character trend.

Plot. One word sums up my opinion of the plot: Meh. It was predictable all the way through. The villains let you know what they plan to do at the beginning of the book and then near the end they do it. There was no shock or surprise. The few times that I didn't see events coming they felt contrived, as there was absolutely no foreshadowing I could detect. As I got closer and closer to the end, I was hoping and praying for some big twist that would turn everything upside down and force the heroes to think on their toes and come up with an imaginative way to use Chekov's various guns to come up with a satisfying ending but it never happened. It was all so linear.

Setting. I loved the setting. It was an excellent mix of the strange and the familiar. It was the part of the book that I found the most interesting by far. There were some very unique and fascinating concepts. Good work.

I rated the story at three stars because although it wasn't "bad", it wasn't good either. I might give another of the books a try, although definitely not the audio version.

If you’ve listened to books by Terry Mixon before, how does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of his other books.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I'll be blunt. I could not stand the narration. In another type of story, the narrator would have been just fine but I could not stand her voices. The princess sounded like a twelve-year-old girl (which made her "moments" with the sergeant downright creepy).
I cringed every time she did a male voice. I actually got to the point where I dreaded male dialogue. It would have been much better if she hadn't tried to do voices for each of the characters. She's a fine orator, but a terrible voice actor.
Speaking of voice actors, I couldn't help but think that the story would have been a lot faster if the main characters had realized that all the villains spoke in creepy and sinister voices and taken them out as soon as they spoke. So many lives could have been saved. My point: Villains should NOT be moustache-twirling men with evil laughs. They should talk like everyone else.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Veil of Shadows?

I wouldn't cut anything, but I would rewrite most of it.

Any additional comments?

Another couple drafts and a different narrator would have done a world of good.

Simply Stellar

This was a very satisfying sequel. It has it all; action, rich storylines, memorable characters and a damn big falling rock. Terry Mixon draws on his background as both a former service man and NASA consultant to enrich his world with authentic nuance.

In addition, the choice of Veronica Giguere as the narrator was genius. Her talented, skillful and mellifluous voice always makes listening a joy.

Awesome Scifi, A Great Book 2

This was the second book and the series and just as good as the first. I really like this series and would recommend it to anyone. This book picks up right where the last left off.

In this book, not only do we get to learn more about the Pale Ones and where they came from, but the main characters also face a new threat from within the government of their new allies.

The narrator did just as well as the last book and definitely earned the 5 stars I gave her.

I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.

A Truly Great SF Series

If you could sum up Veil of Shadows in three words, what would they be?

Space Opera Fun

Who was your favorite character and why?

The princess, I liked her attitude

Have you listened to any of Veronica Giguere’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Veronica is the voice of our crews once again. In this case of a vast crew, Veronica shines. I love listening to her as she gives me different tones, personalities, and emotions with each character relating to the moment they are in

Who doesn't love a kick-ass princess?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Veil of Shadows?

The princess learning to come to grips with the changes that have been forced upon her had just the right mix of determination and humor to make the character sympathetic to the listener/reader.

What about Veronica Giguere’s performance did you like?

As always, V does a great job voicing the whole cast of characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Where the first book in the series was a good introduction to the world and characters, this was a great launch into the larger picture, with plenty of action, character development, and plot expansion.

Any additional comments?

Now, on to the third title. Yeah, I'm definitely hooked.
