Publisher's Summary

In the Unnatural Quarter, golems slave away in sweatshops, necromancers sell black-market trinkets to tourists, and the dead rise up - to work the night shift. But zombie detective Dan Shamble is no ordinary working stiff. When a local senator and his goons picket a ghostly production of Shakespeare in the Dark - condemning the troupe’s “unnatural” lifestyles - Dan smells something rotten. And if something smells rotten to a zombie, you’re in serious trouble…

Before his way of life, er, death, is destroyed, Dan wants answers. Along the way he needs to provide security for a mummified madame, defend a mixed-race couple (he’s a vampire, she’s a werewolf) from housing discrimination, and save his favorite watering hole, the Goblin Tavern, from drying up. Throw in a hairy hit man, a necro-maniac, and a bank robber who walks through walls, and Dan Shamble’s plate is full. Maybe this time, the zombie detective has bitten off more than he can chew…

It was okay.

Too much going on in the story. I wish the author would have cut a few elements in the story to focus on others to make things a bit more interesting. It is very creative and I love the world this book takes place in.

Pleasant but boring

I moderately enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one, just dull. A zombie cozy, I guess. The redemption comes in the bad jokes and puns., and the pig.

Unique

Would you be willing to try another book from Kevin J. Anderson? Why or why not?

In fact, this is my second book by the author. Previously I have read the first book in the series. I eagerly look forward to the next.

What does Phil Gigante bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the character, and the flavor of New Orleans. His southern accent, and his portrayal of the different characters bring a perception of the book that you would not get from simply reading the printed word.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I can't say that it is. If you are looking for something deep, like Lord of the rings or the third kingdom, this ain't it. This is more of a light read. The characters are likable, and the title character will hold your interest. Some books will engross you in their world. This book just brings you along for the heck of it. A fun romp through a unique world where most of the vampires, werewolves, and zombies turn out to be the people you would like to hang with on a Friday night.

Any additional comments?

It's a good read, but it won't keep you up at night.

Unnatural Acts likeable continuation...but fizzles

although I enjoy the Dan Shamble P.I. series, felt the second one was a little lackluster in terms of stories. And the main villain was a bit unbelievable and felt a bit lackluster. Performance, as always, was good but the story itself needed something.

Narrator is superb; characters are easily distinguishable and lively. I love this series and look forward to more from both author and narrator.

Another good story

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Light and fun to listen to. The reader really brings the story to life by giving the characters their own accents and inflections.
