Publisher's Summary

[Contains explicit content.]

University student Anna Winslow has gone missing. The circumstances of her disappearance are far from ordinary, a fact that only fellow student Melissa Lopez appears to appreciate. Motivated by an unexplained and disturbing voicemail message from Anna on the night of her disappearance, Melissa's curiosity quickly turns into a deeper investigation, an obsession even, which she chronicles as a regular podcast - the very recordings that you are about to listen to. She quickly discovers that Anna was a loner with hearing difficulties and had disappeared for a week earlier in the year, only to return with perfect hearing, but with increasingly unstable behavior.

When you add Unheard: The Story of Anna Winslow to your library you will receive all 8 episodes, each with a runtime of approximately 30 minutes.

Meh

Swearing which detracted from the story, and the story itself was improbable. Difficult to finish.

Disliked the ending

This story was great. I listened to every episode in two days. I won't spoil it for anyone, but I was really disappointed in the ending. I still would recommend, though.

Hooks you in, then lets you down

This story begins with quite an interesting premise, and really makes you think it's a school project. It hooked me in with enough to keep me listening through until the end, where honestly, I wish I would have just stopped...

There's three reasons I would suggest you don't listen to this title.

The first one being that every time the main character seems to have hit a wall, there's exactly ONE thing that pops up to progress the story. I feel like she never had to make a choice, every step was just in front of her.

There is also an entire episode with just a series of voicemails, back to back, with an incredibly annoying "BEEP" between each message. Some of them have content, but by the end I just wanted to throw my phone out the window of my car.

Finally, each episode starts with a few minutes recap of the previous episode. This would make a lot of sense if it were released as a weekly show, but it's not, it's been released all in one go. For those of us who listen to a lot of audio books, it's much easier to just play the last 30 seconds of the previous episode if you can't remember where you left off.

All up, this story is poor. You can see the "climactic" ending a mile away.

However, if you do decide to listen, save yourself and skip the episode with the voicemails.

Waste of time

I'm sorry to be negative but this is just poor. I left it and came back to give it another chance but couldn't listen to it even to while away a long car journey. Irritating and improbable.

Mostly very compelling but the ending is a letdown

Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by the narrator?

Yes, I would - I couldn't fault the performances (though it was a bit distracting, and ultimately pointless, to have the protagonist be American when everyone else is British) and the writing, for the most part, provides a compelling mystery in an interesting epistolary format.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending spoiled the whole thing for me. First, the events in the final episode leading up to the ending felt anticlimactic. Second, a lot of the questions raised in the story are never given proper answers. Third, partly because of the second point, I didn't really understand some elements of the ending and how it equated with what had already been established - much better explanation was needed.

Was Unheard: The Story of Anna Winslow worth the listening time?

I enjoyed the first seven episodes a lot, both the mystery and the tension that built up. But Episode 8, by failing to give a satisfactory conclusion, made me question if it had been worthwhile.

Move along... Nothing to see here

What would have made Unheard: The Story of Anna Winslow better?

Just poor. It's like listening to some poor student's attempt at a docu-drama that completely misses any targets...

What will your next listen be?

West Cork. Again

What didn’t you like about the narrator’s performance?

Irritating.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None!

Any additional comments?

N/a

Good idea, marred due to irritating main character

The idea was interesting, but having an American student as the main character wasn't a good idea (unless Audible want to sell this to the US).
First of all, the girl's voice is irritating.
Secondly, she seems to be a continuous advert for Apple's iphone. She seems to mention it, every episode.
The character seems quite dishonest, and lazy, and seems to anything but study...
The co-incidences seem on a par with scenes from Coronation Street, and after 4 episodes the story lost
all credibility.
Waste of a cast ( I much prefer a cast of voices to just one narrator).

Creepy and intriguing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to a friend - in fact I already have!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anna, although we very rarely 'meet' her character. Although she is a main character, we only learn about her through other people. Her fellow students, her professors, parents, doctors etc. No one REALLY knows Anna, and neither do we. Some may find this infuriating, but I found it intriguing.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

Due to the Podcast premise, I found this more like a radio play, rather than an audiobook. The voice actors all did a great job - all had distinctive voices, so I always knew which character was speaking. All were believable, and helped immerse me in the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I binge listened this! I hate earphones, and I even suffered them to listen to this on the bus.

Any additional comments?

A truly immersive experience! Some of the sound effects had me questioning my own sanity. Well worth a listen.

I enjoyed it!

I was hooked by the story from the beginning enough to want to continue listening to it, which is always a good start. The performances and production were good. I listened with an open mind just aiming to be engaged and entertained and this did it for me.

Great start but awful story

This starts really well, and I was hooked after a few minutes. Unfortunately the rest of the story is junk, it really doesn't make sense and all the medical characters are shocking. The actors are not terrible, but they have to work with a rubbish script so can't be 100% at fault.

Gripped me beginning to end

Which character – as performed by the narrator – was your favourite?

Laura ~ she sounded the most real

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me hold my breath at times and made my heart beat faster.

Any additional comments?

Some bits were disturbing and the ending was unexpected and quite creepy. Overall I found it riveting.

Hokey, a total miss

Ugh. Painfully contrived, hokey beyond belief and most people's endurance. Irritating narrator, a lack of conviction from the rest of the cast.

Ok because it’s free.

I didn’t mind this story, it was quite interesting and exciting at times. The ending was disappointing though. It was better than listening to idiots on the radio and had some themes that I enjoyed. I quite liked the main character and it was cool with all the different voices and sounds. I would recommend as “ok”.
