Publisher's summary

Author Chris Pike's debut novel Unexpected World is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds. Assistant District Attorney Dillon Stockdale is on the phone with his daughter when an EMP obliterates the entire electrical grid of the United States. Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on. Gripped with the terrifying realization the plane has crash-landed somewhere in the expansive and dangerous landscape of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Dillon sets out to rescue her before it's too late. A harrowing survival story with non-stop, pulse-pounding action, Unexpected World is a story of good vs. evil, of a complex narrative of fight or flight, and mind-bending choices resulting in profound consequences. Dillon Stockdale is determined, he's well-equipped, and nothing will stop him. Or will it?

Better than Average EMP Prepper Adventure

What did you love best about Unexpected World?

It has some new spins on the popular EMP survival genre. The characters have some depth and it sets up well for the next book/s.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

Kevin did the usual excellent job voicing and giving life to all the characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I'll never get near water in the South without extreme caution and large caliber support.

Any additional comments?

This books takes several loosely tied characters and follows their progress prior to and after an EMP event. Most if not all of their actions are plausible based on their character and experience. The book is well written with only a few moments of suspended disbelief. Of course Kevin Pierce does the usual bang up job in narrating. I think he was born to narrate the genre.
I'm looking forward to the next book or books in this series.

Also any book read by Kevin Pierce is good, he just has that voice.

Lots of Drama

This is an impressive first outing for a series. It's a little heavy on soap opera drama, and short on believable action. And as such, there is not a lot of swift reactionary violence after the fact. The story revolves around attorney Dillon, who's looking for his daughter, who just happens to be on an airplane, and Holly, a potential paramour. So all of the character dynamics are there, it's just the cataclysmic change that is missing. Some authors capture it, while others don't. But still, this story is different in its approach, but that keeps things interesting. Looking forward to book 2.

Of course, the best part is that Kevin Pierce narrates. He elevates everything he reads. Another brilliant performance here.

Another great EMP story

First I have to say that Kevin Pierce is the best. I listen to anything he narrates & lucky for me he reads the type of stuff I love.

This book was very good. Of course there a lot of convenient things going on.... it's one of those where things happen to work out for the characters. Yes there are issues but they over come them.... for the most part.
You can definitely learn a lot listening to or reading this book.
I loved that part of it takes place in Louisiana my home state..... & Texas where I live now.
It's clean & profanity free.... not that it should bother me if it weren't but some people are more sensitive to that so it should be pointed out.
I am looking forward to the next book.

A EMP story that is enjoyable.

This story and character development great for an apocalyptic story. Kevin Pierce is great. I just downloaded book two and was sad that it wasn't available with this narrator.

Outstanding

Any additional comments?

This is a very good book to start the series. Full of suspense and kept me listening. As usual, the narrator did a very good job.

A good survival tale

Any additional comments?

An EMP is set off. Who is responsible? What do we do now? Where are the 3 Bs? Time to take charge of our future.
I like survival novels, especially post-apocalyptic ideas. The authors tend to show the best and worst, as well as the gray areas, of people and it seems much more true as a result. Kevin Pierce has a great voice and delivers the story in a very matter-of-fact manner, much like one would do when in that type of situation. He doesn't have a large range of voices but it doesn't detract from the stories for me, it just seems more like a campfire story years after the (enter disaster here) occurred.

Perfect pace

I decided to read this book on the recommendation of another author who's books I really enjoy.

It seems that I cannot get enough of good EMP stories and fortunately this one didn't disappoint. As with most first in series books, the emphasis is on the initial event and the introduction of main characters who must now survive.

The pace of the book is perfect and the author did a great job in setting up the story for the next book
