Publisher's summary

New edition 2021 with updated research, additional insight, and strategies for communication, information about autism in special populations (such as the gender diverse, those with problematic internet use and gaming addictions, females, and more), and a new section on aging and dementia.

Autism is a childhood condition...right? Not right. Children with autism grow into adults with autism. The great strides we have made in understanding childhood autistic behaviors and interventions have lagged dramatically behind the needs of aging autistics. What of the young adult trying to build relationships? What of the middle-aged autistic adult who has been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and lacks an effective treatment plan? What of the aging adult who is showing increasingly rigid autistic behaviors and is misdiagnosed as having frontotemporal dementia?

Understanding Autism in Adults and Aging Adults: 2nd Edition is a one-of-a-kind resource designed to improve the correct diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in adults. Filled with clinical stories that bring to life the concepts discussed, the audiobook provides strategy-based interventions to address issues of personal and household management, medical care, communication, sensory processing symptoms, and emotional and behavioral regulation.

This book did more for me than years of therapy ever did!

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would. I finished it in two days and took six full size copy pages of notes and multiple screen recordings. I laughed, and I cried. I’m 28 years old and am getting assessed for ASD in three months. If there was any doubt in my mind that I might be in the spectrum, this book obliterated it. I feel like I could be the poster child for this book. It made me feel more seen and understood than I ever have in my entire life. SO many things that I never understood about myself now make perfect sense. I cannot wait for my assessment and am looking forward to hopefully getting an official diagnosis. I’m so glad I chose to listen to this book beforehand because it helped me organize my thoughts, and I now feel so much more confident in my ability to accurately describe my experience. Thank you so much, Theresa. I have no doubt this book is going to literally change my life.

If you want to understand the mind and experience of someone with ASD, or if you think that might be you, you NEED to read this book. Trust me. Just do it. You won’t regret it.

P.S. the narrator did an excellent job!

New perspectives

I found some of the perspectives new and refreshing after consuming a lot of autism media after my diagnosis

Listening Better Than Reading

I was diagnosed with ASD & Savant Syndrome at age 60. I read as much as possible, but found only people with ASD really understood, especially late diagnosed adults. That is until I read this book. I realized just how much my life experiences were connected to being an Autistic Savant with high intelligence. I'm a visual person who gets severely overstimulated with all the tiny letters (forming words) on a page. I found that I retain information by listening.

I appreciated this book

I learned some new things from this book. I really appreciated it. It is a challenge to help someone on the spectrum who is not diagnosed until they are an adult.

Not appropriate for audiobook

The book may be good in written form. It is very technical and clinical, with references to studies and endless lists (that are difficult to follow in audio format). Maybe this would be a good textbook. It is not for individuals or families seeking answers.
