Publisher's Summary

July, 1861 is dawning, and America tears its loyalties.

She didn't belong.

War wages within Mae Harper as well. Which duty to obey? Follow her unruly spirit, or remain home in petticoat and parlor? Both Mae's brothers enlist in the Union army, but she burns to do more than sit and sew. With one rash decision, her brother's breeches, and her long locks shorn, an impetuous girl makes a perilous journey south. She doesn't belong, but she conceals her identity and fights to prove her worth.

He became a man in the wilds of the West.

His country calls on him now, and Sergeant Wesley Metzger marches East once again. His old regiment disbanded, the veteran soldier is put in command of training inexperienced city boys. So many are ill-prepared, but Wesley vows to protect his men and the country they serve. He studies the men entrusted to him to discover weaknesses which will betray them in battle.

Her secret will ruin her. His desire will overwhelm him.

Mae can deceive many, but not the man who has become her protector. He looks at her too keenly, and her body's response to his nearness threatens to betray her. She strives to confirm herself in a world of men, and yet Sergeant Metzger arouses every feminine desire within her. Can she trust him with her secret?

Wesley knows there is something the lad is hiding. The boy doesn't belong. He's too young, and he's not fit for hardship. The look in young Harper's eyes is too tender, and the pull Wesley feels is not natural. Sergeant Metzger is a man of action, and he must know - what is Private Harper keeping from him? And why is there a forbidden temptation?

Loved It

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. I enjoyed the story and the way the author weaved history into the story. There were several places where humor was used effectively. The story about a girl who chose to be a boy in order to serve. This was a nice story and the narration was very well done.

Civil War.Battles, Families Torn Apart..Finding Love

Mae has two older brothers who joined the Union army..with a very proud father supporting them. Mae has spent her life trying to do what her brothers do, feeling that being female shouldn’t stop her plus she would gain the positive regard of her father.
Wes has been in the army for years and recently in the west..he is brought back for the Civil War as an experienced soldier helping to guide the new recruits.
The dynamics of gender roles, the horrors of the civil war, self esteem, the opinions of others, and the importance of finding support to be who you are. There were a couple of steamy scenes, but the waited until the H and h were better acquainted.
The narrator did a good job. I enjoyed her interpretation..although sometimes she was a little dramatic when it didn’t seem appropriate.

Fast paced, romantic and fun!

When Mae was growing up, she wasn't a prim and proper girl. When her brothers left to go off to war, she made a reckless decision to join them. Disguised as a boy, she goes to war to serve her country, but her commanding officer, Wesley knows something is amiss. When he figures it out what is pulling him to this "boy" he does whatever he can to protect her. But will it be enough? This is a true love story so easy to fall into. As we get to know Mae, it is evident that she is full of spunk, and is ready to do what she has to. The relationship she forges with Wesley is one of real respect for each other's abilities, and their attraction to each other does not get in the way of what needs to be done. It does result in some steamy nights though! I love Mae's relationship with her brother Shannon, it gives a great deal of background for how Mae has become the woman she is. This is an enjoyable historical romance.

Charley Ongel narrates this romance wonderfully. She does both male and female points of view with ease, giving each character a voice and personality. You can hear her emotional connection with Mae, and it shines through in the performance.

5 star fire in your ear book

First one I have from the author Marie. This was a fast pace story with lots of layers .loved how the author took a storyline and gave it a romance to heal the heart The historical parts were well written . Charley Ongel was great. She did this narrating perfectly. Love her clear strong voice

Hero is Wesley. Heroine is Mae

This story takes place during the civil war .You see Mae arguing with her brothers that came back from a post. She knows how to shoot better than any boy (Mae thinks ) She wants to join and help her side win . Mae is told no women go to war , she keeps on saying she can be a nurse. When that doesn’t pan out she goes undercover as a boy and joins .

Wesley knows something is wrong , why else would he be attracted and drawn to the new boy ? Then he discovers the boy is not a boy but a girl. Mae feels attracted to Wesley also They donlet the attraction loose and have beautiful steamy nights. But that doesn’t get in the way of what needs to be done to win the war

Historical Hotness!

Cool story! Mae's a bit rough around the edges and would rather follow her brothers off to the Union Army. It's a rough journey and she finds herself posing as a young man to camouflage herself among all the other soldiers.

Her "boss" is Sergeant Wesley Metzger, and he soon begins to question ... and then something unexpected happens. Desire. It's a fun and spunky historical/romantic story, and I enjoyed listening. Very nicely done. Narration was awesome!
